In Monmouth Street, the boarded-up door and bricked-up windows at street level are to spaces below the floor of the front of the stalls; it’s the boiler room.

At the upper level, the pair of bricked-up windows are to the men’s toilets housed behind a splay wall to the left of the stage. The blank wall at the corner at that level enclosed an ante-room to the toilets.

In the original plans the ante-room was to include stairs down to a street level exit, emerging at the position of the boarded up door. The stairs would have been very steep; and made worse by the requirement to recess the emergency exit doors so they did not swing out over the pavement. Consequently, the exit for the left side of the front stalls was relocated, in later plans and construction, to the blocked-up one at the side from where the line of the removed stairs is visible on the brick wall.
