What can you tell me about the Acme? Did it have a balcony? It looks like it was tall enough. The Belvedere was closed I think before I was born, but I was inside on the first day Erna Fredricks started the renovations for her store. The place was 100% intact inside, curtains, seats, light fixtures. It was like a time warp. I only wish I had taken pictures.
I think by the 70’s the Music hall had no choice but to run regular coming attractions. One of the main reasons was that some of the family films they booked were so obscure people would have no idea what they were.
I drove from Forest Hills with 4 friends yesterday to see The Aviator at the Lafayatte. We all love seeing the cinema classics there so much we decided it was worth the drive to see a first run movie as well. We did lunch at the diner and then caught the first show. I have told so many people at work about this gem, and many of them asked the directions to make the trip to see a movie.
Everyone should boycott whats left of City Cinemas for all their sneaky games. The sad part is the block is not even being torn down, just the theatres are being gutted for retail. Too bad the Gotham and Manhattan 1 & 2 did not hang in there awhile, they would have gotten good bookings again.
Many theatres make money but the land developers are not the same people who run the theatres. Many theatres had long leases and when they are up the landlords won’t renew them or they want so much that the theatre could never make a profit. When I was still in the biz, the Beekman did huge grosses when it had the right product. I am sure that is still the case. This is very sad, this place is a gem.
They used to play some offbeat things here in between the normal bookings. The Jerry lewis Massapequa theatre is not on here yet. I would add it but I am not sure if it was a twin or single screen.
I don’t see where anyone made a mockery of your work. I think people are more confused about the present situation. The theatre was supposed to be a five-plex until the Queens Theatre Group ran out of money and now one screen is open. Why tear the place apart and only wind up with a twin anyways? And of all things the put another drugstore in there.

Its nice to hear drive-ins are still opening
Porn most likely kept this open years after it would have closed with all the competition from multiplexes.

I’m not sure if it was THE last, but Reflections in a Golden Eye was one of the final films to play here.

Does anyone remember how long the indoor was closed before the drive-in closed? I am guessing maybe 5 years.
I wish they would restore the Demille
I think this used to belong to Trans-Lux?
It was still a theatre.
Gone are the days sadly where Broadway shows make great musicals like Oklahoma and Sound of Music. I did love Chicago though. Was Phantom in scope?
Has anyone been here yet?
Did Century’s run this at the end?
Anything ever rumored to be going in here? Since the area is improving it might do some business.

I called the recording and all three screens are now showing Bollywood features.
I never heard of a multi-plex with one cashier and one concession, I would not go there either.
I always remember the big block ads in the Village Voice calling it “Film at the Public”
Now that was a marquee !!
There are no art movies being shown on SI, is this an area that would support a place like that?

Malverne never had a balcony, it’s a well run clean place but small.
I forgot all about this place.
