The Thomas W. Lamb project was already being hyped as “America’s Most Magnificent Theatre” and “A Kansas City Institution” prior to its grand opening on October 28th, 1927.
The larger auditorium “doubled” for that of the Roxy, a cinema supposedly in Oxford, in the episode entitled “Cartouche” of the ongoing British TV series “Endeavour” (the young Inspector Morse). Standing in for the Roxy’s exterior was the former Carlton in London’s Islington, now a church.
“They’re playing cops and robbers” was the slogan used to connect the photos.
After a record-breaking run at the Roxy in Manhattan, the Technicolor musical made its Coney Island debut at the RKO Tilyou on August 8th, 1943.
Previous record-breaking week included the Fourth of July holiday.
