Thanks for your condolences on my Aunt Gerry. My condolences to you on the more recent loss of your cousin. Actually, I speak every day but Sunday with another aunt who’s six years older (graduated Bushwick High School in 1941) but I know what you mean about the WW II generation dying, and getting all the info one can. My dad, born October 1919, is still alive, and I speak with him about the old days every Sunday. Several years ago I wrote down all his old Bushwick addresses, and “Bway” (Chris) of this site, very kindly took and posted photos of them !

I know what you mean. It’s like I said to frankie and BrooklynJim when we met in Ridgewood Aug 25 2007 : when I still lived in Ridgewood, I must have walked past the RKO Madison Theater thousands of times, taking it for granted, thinking : it’s been there since the beginning of time, and will always be there, then, missing it, when it was no longer there.

That’s OK, Muzer. Your cousin’s names might be in my Aunt Gerry’s F K Lane 1947 yearbook. I would have to look through it again to be sure, but I can’t easily get to it. It’s buried in family stuff back in my garage. The only names that come quickly to mind are Claire Ward and Stuart Rabinowitz. I can’t question my Aunt Gerry about it, because she died January 5, 1992.

It was my father’s younger sister, not mine. She graduated Franklin K. Lane High School in Cypress Hills in June 1947. At the time, she lived at 1454 Bushwick Avenue with her parents. She next attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, but did not graduate. When she lived with her parents in Cypress Hills, she was an adult, out of school, and working in Manhattan. She was working in midtown Manhattan when the KK subway service started, and so used it to shorten her commute from midtown, home to Cypress Hills.

Welcome aboard, Mopella. Your time in Cypress Hills roughly corresponds to when my dad’s parents and younger sister lived there ( 1957 – 1968 ). Thanks for posting your memories here.

MVitale, Salerno’s Restaurant is in neither Ridgewood nor Glendale, but in Richmond Hill, on the west side of Hillside Avenue, next door to the RKO Keith Richmond Hill Theater, between the theater and Bessemer Street and the LIRR elevated viaduct, and the now-closed Richmond Hill LIRR station.

Good to see you back on this page, BklynJim. Yes, much talent emerged from Bklyn (as well as modesty !), present company included.

MVitale, thx for confirming what some of us had suspected, that CT contributor robbie dupree was the one and the same of “Steal Away” (1980) and “Brooklyn Girls” (1982) fame. He was on here last year, but I haven’t seen any posts of his in a while. Perhaps he shuns the notoriety of fame or has moved on to other pursuits. As you know, a lot of talent emerged from Brooklyn (as well as the other boroughs) over the years, and Robbie was certainly one of ‘em.

I lived on Hemlock St., corner of Etna St., from 1960 -1968. I remember summers at Cypress Pool and Long’s Ice Cream Parlor on Fulton Street. Such fond memories. I met my husband (39 years!) at Long’s. We had our first date in 1963 at Long’s, went to see “The Parent Trap” at the Embassy Theatre on Fulton Street and then to Furci’s Restaurant on Atlantic and Crescent St. for dinner. What a wonderful neighborhood that was. We also remember Robbie Dupree “hanging out” on Fulton Street. We called him Bobby back then. It was great to hear his voice on the radio back in the day. Hope life is treating him well. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Philly… no, my relatives were Nicholas and Laura DiMarco (cousins) and Rose and Frank (their parents).

Love that tapeshare! Been looking at that site from the beginning. Grew up on Jamaica Avenue between Logan and Norwood near Highland Park. Went to PS 65, JHS 171 and Franklin K. Lane High. Recognize lots of people and places. They even have a picture of my old block circa 1910!

phillysantella, I just saw it as a white rectangle on my Bklyn USGS quad sheet map. That was my first thought as to where Liberty Park was.

But, as an ex-Ridgewoodite, I’m not getting between you debating ex-ENY'ers and Cypress-Hillers, or whatever you’d care to call yourselves !

FYI, a section of Glendale, Queens, was once known as Liberty Park.
