Thanks, Chris, that aerial view is great ! It also gives a view of the renovation in progress of the L subway line – M elevated line connection within the Wyckoff-Gates-Myrtle triangle.

Thanks, Lost Memory. I’ve never checked the Google map for the Parthenon, but I’m not at all surprised that it’s wrong.

Thanks, Warren, for the references and explanation.

Thanks, Warren, for this info. I never knew that the Parthenon had “taken over” for the Ridgewood Theatre in this way, in the summer of 1930. How do you know this ?

Tonino, I’m not sure what luncheonette you mean, but I remember Ripley’s men’s store.

Peter P: I do, I do …..ie, remember Bickford’s. Do you remember the great luncheonette at the other end of the streer? It was run by two Jewish Greek guys, Ben and Irving. I worked at Ripley’s mens store between the two and near the Madison.

I finally found an ad that shows the Parthenon. April 1, 1959 they were playing a neighborhood run of “Some Came Running” and “Wild Heritage”.

Although this theatre wasn’t as lavish as the Rko Madison I did spend many enjoyable weekends here as a child. On saturday mornings they also showed serials along with a cartoon.

PeterK, Bway, Lostmemory
How do I do a full history search on a building whether residential
or commercial, which involves the deeds and transfers of all the
owners to that particular bldg ?
I tried NYC.Gov, but all they have is location id numbers and
violations.
Any information will be most appreciated.

Thanks PeterK,
Its great reminiscing the Ridgewood of the 70’s.
No I don’t remember Bickford’s, but I do remember the
coffee shop with the newstand on the corner of Wyckoff and
Palmetto. A pizzeria under the el, which was next to what
is now KFC.
And a candy store off Grove st and Wyckoff.
After 75', I moved to East Flatbush.

LouRom, please send me a private message through this board if you w ant to “keep going” with these recollections.

I attended St. Brigid from September 12, 1960 (began kindergarten that day, Tropical Storm Donna hit the NYC area that day also) to June 1969 when I graduated from eighth grade.

I remember “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” at the Ridgewood in Sept. 1974, “The Trial of Billy Jack” there Thanksgiving 1974.

Do you remember the Bickford’s that preceded McDonald’s at Myrtle and Wyckoff ?

Thanks PeterK,
the 70’s were good times, I went to a special catholic for gifted
students that rented the basement of St. Brigids.
McDonald’s just opened in 74 and the Madison was showing
“Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, the lobby would feature upcoming
movies like “The Tangerine Man”.
The neighborhoods along Wyckoff and St. Nicholas Ave. were
nice, compared to today.
The B26 would take me home to Bushwick, Aaah, I could keep going.

I remember Luigi’s there from about 1969 on but never had a haircut there. Glenridge Medical Labs and a stationery or paper supply store was next door also.

My mother-in-law remembers going to the Parthenon in the 50'
and my dad used to watch boxing shows at the St. Nicholas Arena.
The “Post Office” disco brought back memories, I never went there
but there was always bad press in and out of the club.
Does anyone remember the hair styling salon on Cypress not far
from the old Martin’s Paint.
I think the name was Luigi’s ??, took my haircut there in 77'

This story mentions the theatres in the Ridgewood areas and how the Parthenon had a dish night.

I am not familiar with the bowling alley or when it opened but I can tell you that the date listed for the Parthenon Theatre closing is 1961.

Yes, 11227 is now a “Dead Zone”, to borrow the title of the Stephen King novel and film, as far as NY is concerned.

You are right Peter, it’s Decatur St, not Summerfield.

The old Glenwood Theater site and new Ridgewood post office was at the southeast corner of Myrtle Avenue and Decatur Street.

The older post office on Cypress Avenue became a disco known as “The Post Office”. In early 1989 I seem to recall learning of someone being arrested there for packing an illegal assault rifle.

I remember the older post office on Cypress Avenue being open as far back as I can remember (I lived on Cornelia from 1955 to 1991) and open until the new one opened at Myrtle and Decatur.
