Reopens Thursday 14 December with Battle of the Sexes, Blade of the Immortal, Brigsby Bear, Stronger, The Disaster Artist, The Florida Project and The Man Who Invented Christmas.

Now has 45 seats in screen 1 (plus 1 wheelchair space), 49 seats in screen 2 (plus 1 wheelchairs space), 47 seats in screen 3 and 44 seats in screen 4. All screens are equipped with RealD.

Adult ticket prices have increased to £10 off-peak (Monday to Thursday) and £15 peak (Friday to Sunday).

The webpage is using photos of another Odeon Luxe so I fear some people might be a little disappointed by these dinky screens!

I have to qualify the news about Coke to Pepsi by stating that this came from a Cineworld barman rather than any official source!

Regarding mice there’s an interesting exchange on Twitter where apparently a mouse came out of one of the wall panels in screen 5 and ran across people’s laps/chests! And I was once in a screening at Haymarket when a woman across the aisle jumped up and screamed after a mouse ran across her foot.

The fact they’ve had UNICK in does suggest to me that they intend to carry out a proper refurbishment.

It seems Cineworld have solved the problem of every seat in the IMAX screen having a Pepsi Max logo – soon to be switching from Coke to Pepsi across the chain (bar supplier has already changed – now hoping they ditch Rollover and their awful nachos)

Some interesting shots of old murals and the original proscenium plasterwork: https://www.28dayslater.co.uk/odeon-cinema-aka-regent-theatre-westover-road-bournemouth-july-2017.t110311

They’re like a modern day kleptomaniacal Cannon (albeit without a parent company churning out dubious films)!

When it comes to refurbishments Cineworld seem to prefer to subject their customers to building sites rather than closing completely, although I could see how the layout here might prevent them trading through.

The best way I can describe it is, if you imagine a lot of LED bulbs or lights have multiple LEDs inside them rather than one single chip. Let’s say hypothetically that the 10cm diameter downlighter has 8 LEDs inside it – 4 of them go out for the trailers, then when the feature starts it drops down to two. So it’s a kind of dimming I suppose but comes across as very crude, would work better if they had a diffuser of some sort.

The lighting issue seems to be common to all recent Cineworld builds and many of their refurbishments.

For example their cinema at the O2 as opened already had LED lighting in all of the screens but of course back in 2007 the output from LED bulbs was pretty poor in both colour, spread and brightness; the ceiling had lots of lights but all pretty dim and relatively free of glare.

Skip forward to the recent refurbishment and the ceiling now has fewer, brighter luminaries in a warmer colour tone. Fine as house lights (if a little stark) however instead of dimming all the LEDs in each fixture, the number of LEDs illuminated is reduced. Still way too bright, and as they’re situated across the auditorium and not just over stairs they create a lot of glare particularly for those wearing glasses. I can’t understand why they persist with this design as Facebook, Twitter and various review websites are full of people complaining about the lighting. The stairs and walkways have their edges nicely lit with LED strips so the safety argument doesn’t really stack up.

Such bulbs are still very much available from Ryness!

Now if only its sister on Haymarket could get a similarly high quality exterior restoration and lighting package.

Screen 2 (stadium seating but not the largest) is a scope screen and the side masking was used on my visit the other day. I’m only an occasional visitor here (I live in London but have family in the area) but certainly the scope film I saw earlier this year in one of the flat screens used the top masking.

The retail/leisure park this sits on was bought by the council and is being redeveloped as part of a town centre regeneration, and The Light is opening a cinema on the other side of the town.

This cinema is Cineworld’s oldest purpose-built multiplex. Going by online reviews and photos very little has been changed since 1989, including the decidedly retro red neon Kiosk sign typical of the early Cannon/MGM multiplexes.

Practically unchanged in November 2017 – the only real difference being the Cineworld logotype being replaced with the current version (the original star has been kept)

This is actually the entrance to TK Maxx (originally Woolworths), the cinema entrance is just to the left.

Prices have been reduced to £6 for adults, £3.50 for children, seniors and students and £14 for adults, all day every day.

This cinema bears all the hallmarks of an early Cineworld build, with a large, tall foyer with sloped mirrored ceiling in the middle fringed with pink neon, concession counter with popcorn machines raised up in the middle, and wide corridors. There’s an awkwardly placed set of tiny toilets just behind the ticket check, which get overcrowded with people not realising there are larger toilets in the screen corridors.

Screens are a mixture of stadium and non-stadium, all with masking and decent sightlines. Internal signage looks somewhat cheesy by modern standards with screen numbers on backlit stars and toilet signage hinting at aliens or space travel! This theme extends to wall lights in the screens which look a little like toy UFOs.

Curiously the exterior has the current Cineworld logotype, but still features the star from its 1999 opening.

This cinema never seems very busy, and consequently the whole place manages to look a little dated without looking tired – it certainly has the brightest, cleanest version of Cineworld’s purple patterned carpet I’ve seen!

As illustrated in this Instagram post, the foyer lighting feature installed by Virgin in the 90s has been replaced by much more appropriate chandeliers, and the cove lighting appears to have been fixed too. Can’t tell what colour it’s been painted now but seems the white was just undercoat. https://instagram.com/p/BZhoOOEDGbO/

Yes, it’s perfect for that and the Atmos audio set up is excellent.
