Opened September 14, 1966 with two Philips Cinema of Holland DP70 Projectors. “DP” short for “Double Projector”, “70” designed specifically as a 70mm projector. These projectors could play all 70mm and 35mm formats except VistaVision. Later on the projectors would be called Todd-AO Projectors, Universal 70/35, and a newer version Norelco AAII.
Panorama projectors came from the Town Theatre in Rochester, New York. When no longer used at the Panorama one went to The Stoneridge Theatre in Rochester, and the other went to The Strand Theatre in Brockport, New York.
Michael, I know your a stickler for perfection, but I think CT could use some cleaning up. I wish everyone would go through their posts and delete ones for at least photos and websites that don’t work. Please look up the Willard Theatre in Norfolk, Virginia. Don’t you think I could remove some of those comments that have nothing to do with the theatre? As I wrote above the same ad that gives the address of 360 Penfield, also gives the location as PANORAMA PLAZA. That PLAZA is located at 1601 Penfield.
Michael, Sorry I deleted that, I sorta felt like it was an email, a comment that no longer had any use to CT, and now that CT lets us delete them, I thought I would get rid of it. Just as I would think I would get rid of this one. It really has nothing to do with the site. I did forget to mention that the ad lists the theater being at Panorama Plaza, that’s why I came up with the address I did. All I wanted to do is fill in some missing info on a CINERAMA Theater.
Michael, thanks for catching that. I’ve been through the whole Rochester/Penfield thing. The Post Office seems to think its Rochester and so do the Maps. The Temple Sinai at 363 Penfield is in Rochester. The problem with 360 Penfield is it is strictly residential. Perhaps the street numbers changed. I’ll do more checking. I would have never got into this theater if you hadn’t listed it as a CINERAMA Theater!
THANKS Michael for starting the “REMEMBERING CINERAMA” series again!
I notice the first time “THIS IS CINERAMA” was shown, it was 3-strip/ 26fps/ 7-track stero. For the Re-issue it was 70mm/ 24fps/ 6-track stero. It lost 1-track of stero/ 2fps/ did it it cover as much of the screen as the 3-strip?
PLEASE CHANGE ADDRESS TO:
U.S. 31 & HATFIELD LAKE ROAD
THANKS
James Acuff was the projectionist when the cinema first opened.
CT could use a more exact address, photos both inside and out and more info.
