With 3D to bring in many of those releases alongside the Bruin, who else thinks the AVCO may be the next casualty in Westwood?
Perhaps Carmike will take over the Chinese. If they want to get thier foot in the door in L.A. it would be the place to start.
It’s Carmike Cinemas, believe it or not. Patrick Goldsmith has a nice piece in today’s LA Times on Robert Bucksbaum, the owner, and his feelings on selling the theater. Carmike, headquarted in Columbus, Georgia, is the nation’s 4th largest chain. This will be their first theater in California. I have to admit this is a big surprise, and I hope Carmike devotes the reosurces and money to keep this amazing theater a viable and exciting location for exhibiting motion pictures.
Anybody got any speculation on when we’ll see the takeover? The Crest website and phone line are officially out of service, no hint on who’s next. WALL STREET 2 would be a Crest kinda movie; maybe that’s what they’ll re-open with?
Oh..Thanks. SSG is not the owner of the actual theaters, SSG is like a prometer for theaters. SSG is the best in biz'n. I did the research and found out who is the actual new owner of the fine arts theater and I can tell you for a fact, it is not the same buyer, who is buying the crest.

The most logical idea would be AMC taking it, with Avco as the move-over, but the chances of them acquiring a single screen with a poor history of profitability is about as likely as Los Angeles freezing over today.
What I’m piecing together is that the Fine Arts guy bought the theater, and someone else is leasing it from him? It is on his website, after all. Maybe it’s a special agreement where he will use it for screenings at off hours and they will use it during business hours? We’ll know on Friday, right?
Regency does not purchase theatres, they only lease. Whoever took over I thought actually bought the theatre.
If that’s true, I wonder if they’d ever consider saving the Festival.
I’d say Regency—-after taking over the Village and the Bruin, the Majestic fits into their corporate philosophy.
So who do people think? Regency? Laemmle?

Majestic Crest to keep showing movies

Robert Bucksbaum, who recently announced he is giving up the Majestic Crest theatre in Westwood, says in his final email to customers that a chain will be taking over and continuing to show movies.
Dear Patrons,
It has been a great pleasure bringing movies to you in this beautiful historic theatre the past eight years. Owning the Crest has been a once in a lifetime experience that I will always cherish. We are currently showing EAT, PRAY, LOVE which will run now through September 16th.
Daily show times are: 1:15, 4:15, 7:30 and 10:30.
On September 17th a major theatre chain will take over the reigns of the theatre. They will keep showing movies on the big screen and I sincerely hope you will continue to patronize the Crest. As you know the single screen theatre is becoming an endangered species and these theatres need your support. Your attendance will help to ensure that the Crest lives on well into the future.
I would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to each of you for your support and to the many patrons who e-mailed their best wishes and kind words since we announced the sale.

Eat Pray Love is entering ist 5th week. Is the theatre now officially being run by the new owners. Is it going to remain a theatre after all?
“Eat Pray Love” would certainly appear to be doing very well there; it sold 52 Internet tickets for the prime showing tonight, which is the most I’ve ever seen. (The website isn’t very well advertised and tickets come at a $3 premium online.)
Whew! Thought Westwood was losing another one. I give Bucksbaum alot of credit and thanks for rescuing the theatre 7 years ago. Westwood village has always been my favorite theatre district and it hurts to see how it has turned out. The big empty lot where the National used to sit is still painful. On the plus side, my recent Village theatre visit to see Inception was great and I appreciate Regency’s commitment to it and the Bruin. I’ll have to go Saturday to the Crest to see Eat Pray Love and perhaps another trip to the Village to see Inception.
If you go to their site, it looks like it’s going tobe run like regular movie theatre and large screening room.
Also from LAobserved, Bucksbaum says he thinks the sale will be “a positive experience for the theater’s patrons and the Westwood community.” That doesn’t sound like the new owner is going to close it.

The other interesting element on that note: “…the Julia Roberts drama ‘Eat Pray Love,’ between Aug. 13 and 19.” Does this mean that Bucksbaum will be in charge for just one more week? That would seem to indicate the new operator will continue to run films, as presumably the movie comes with a two-week contract. I guess he could’ve wheeled and dealed and it could move to AVCO after just a week, but that seems doubtful. Then again, maybe the writer of the article was providing an inaccurate timeline.

According to LAobserved, Bucksbaum once said it cost $22,000 a month to keep the marquee lit.
“Well for the last few months, the person that operated the Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills Has had the Crest Theatre listed on his business cards.”
Might that be the person who moved his digital projectors into the Crest?
