DramaQueen: My friend’s comments were as follows: “Any researcher would begin by seeking out the person in charge of the operation. It used to be a Mr. Fagan, but he retired. They must have a website, no? I’m sure all the contact information is on it. Something as simple as a phone call to Shea’s should start the ball rolling.”

DramaQueen: I have sent an email to a friend and resident of Buffalo who may be able to help you…stay tuned.

longislandmovies: It would take several million dollars to bring it back to its original state 100 years ago, but I do beleive it would take less dollars if just making the general repairs and getting the place open again, imo. Go to my CT news post and you will find contact information there along with the recent Post Journal article. Thank you for your inquiry!

FYI, As many of you know Jamestown NY is the former home of the legendary Lucille Ball, First Lady of Comedy. The Winter Garden is just up the street on Main from the Lucy Desi Gift Shop, the Lucy-Desi Playhouse and close to the Lucy Desi Museum on Pine Street.

I have posted under “Add News” about the sale of the Winter Garden Theater so hopefully a buyer will be found to save this historic theater. Keep your fingers crossed.

DakRoland: I really think the Post Journal would love to see the Winter Garden blueprints and the lobby photos (circa 1940s) now that the article has come out in the paper. Would love to chat with you about this article, etc. @

A buyer must be found for the Winter Garden so if anyone knows of a possible buyer please contact the DJDC or the Arts Council.

LuisV: The citizens of Jamestown are very fortunate to have restored “the Reg” downtown and it would be nice to see “the other” theatre downtown restored….the Winter Garden.

Patrick Fanelli wrote the Winter Garden article as it is online today. Sure hope they can save this theatre from demolition as that would be a crime to lose a 100 year old theatre yet the auditorium doesn’t look like it did 100 years ago as it was so “remodeled” over the years. I always thought it would make a great movie house to show Lucille Ball movies with a Lucy theme lobby if the Lucy Desi Playhouse acquired it.

Great marquee shot in a Norman Rockwell-ish type of town!

jamestownguy: And it would be interesting to learn how it came to be that a PJ journalist decided to write about the Winter Garden! What is the name of the journalist as an email is usually provided with the article as contact information?

jamestownguy: Please email me with more PJ Winter Garden article details as I’m sure it goes into the history of the theatre with possible photos?

I just checked the Post Journal website and didn’t see the Winter Garden article. In the meantime, I will find someone who will save the paper for me.

Ron: Thanks for this “walk through history” post which is appropriate since Boston has quite an historical past which includes many of its theatres.

JTFox: I just ordered the Marquee issue. Thanks and I can’t wait to see the auditorium photo of what it “once was”.

Patsy

JTFox: Would the Fourth Quarter 2005 of the Marquee be Vol. 37 #4? That issue lists Lost Theatres of Boston (10 theatres profiled).

Ian: How was it that “there was very little left for Emerson to restore”? Was their vandalism or did the elements get to things such as rain through a leaky roof, etc. that destroyed gilding and paint? So when I read “almost identical” my heart sank. And hen was the last time year theatre operated as a theatre? A previous talks about the year 1983 and that it was “a mess” so it had to be prior to that year. I lived in Boston in the mid 60’s and wish I had seen this theatre then.

Or these inside the Paramount/Denver!?! If any of these photos are anything like what the Paramount/Boston had, then Boston has really lost an INTERIOR “gem” though they restored the marquee to enjoy…doesn’t make awhole lot of theatrical sense, imo! Emerson College is left is a gutted building. I certainly hope that certain artifacts were saved and will be incorporated into the new auditorium, at least!
