One more time: there’s no for-profit movie operator making a bid. This is a huge historic theater with more than 800 seats, not a 375 triplex. I’ve seen movies there over the years, and wish great luck in establishing a nonprofit status that can enable this Art Deco gem to survive.
It is difficult to keep historic houses this size open! Many in other cities are nonprofits. There’s nothing wrong with a nonprofit organization employing an experienced theater operator, i.e. the owner.
Nobody on this site is offering to purchase the Senator & run it as a for profit.
I don’t mean ANY particular person on this site, but on this website, there are many back seat drivers. They don’t own the Senator nor are they bidding to be a new “for profit” owner.
“Film clearance” means the theater does not get the movie if it another has an exclusive. “Competition” also means other theaters show it, taking away audience from a huge single screen theater. Landmark is in Baltimore as are other theaters that may not have clearance.
Ok, I’ll bite. Multiplexes draw businesses away. How’s the movie theater competition compare between the two? My point is you can’t simply consider what goes on inside the theater, but must consider how the competition may limit what you can do.
Also, what was done seemed appropriate to ensure the thread stay about the Ziegfeld. However, in light of various comments, the deletion can now be viewed to have been a mistake. For the most part, this thread IS about the Ziegfeld, so if once in a while it strays just a bit, that would seem ok.
Two? Who’s the 2nd one? Vito we know about. He’s not going anywhere- he has lots of fun posting on this thread and we all appreciate him. But, please tell us who the 2nd one is, so it can be figured out whether that’s good or bad.
I just googled. Today there are actual movie reviews of the movie online. Vito didn’t exactly receive an exclusive premiere with only him in the audience. Again, let’s not lose sight that this is the Ziegfeld page!
To that mattter, I asked if anybody saw the Godfather I and II presentations this year?
I’ll be eager to know about “Che” since I doubt I will attend.
Bill, “no” and apparently you saying that the Internet doesn’t have a Movie discussion blog?? I quickly glanced and found one or more. Here’s one. View link
From my understanding, the Ridgewood page is so out of hand, nobody wishes to spend days cleaning it up. No other thread will be allowed to become a general forum, having nothing to do with the theater. Above at August 15, 2008, the site’s policy is reiterated.
Giles added “The Defiance” I hadn’t realized “Benjamin Button” would be there for so little time. I’m borrowing a Chicago page post from a fellow who’s no stranger to NYC, so this starts at the Ziegfeld on Friday:
I work in a screening faciiltiy which does quite a bit of work for Steven Soderbergh, and we’ve been screening “Che” from early versions to the current roadshow version that is being released in some cities this week. It would indeed be ideal at the McClurg. The first half is in Scope, and the 2nd half after intermission is “Flat” or 1.85 aspect ratio. Both halves are preceeded by an Overture with maps on the screen highlighting locations in the respective half. There is also exit music for both halves. Their office is releasing a cue sheet with the picture that will include pictures taken from our screen showing the relationship of the subtitles to the frame. There are no plans to release the roadshow version on film, and all screenings will be done digitally, but it’s definitely the sort of thing the McClurg large house would have done.

Clearview’s website indicates that following the Harry Potter marathan, on Christmas Day, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” will start at the Ziegfeld.
When people receive emails in their mailboxes that there’s another Ziegfeld post, they expect it is actually about the Ziegfeld, NOT about any movie playing at other theaters.
Vito’s comment appeared & then disappeared because this is not a “discuss any movie” thread. As comments above indicate, the Ziegfeld will soon have 2 special showcase engagements: “Che” and the Harry Potter marathon. Both special engagements can be found at the Clearview website and each is actually relevant to this thread.
Here is the July 13, 2007 USA Today article about its closing:

I stand by the 2nd paragraph of my Comment above.
Nonprofit status often SAVES historic theaters.

I went by it today. A business, retail perhaps, is going inside. Workers were on the roof doing something.
“suburban” would still have a mistake since we aren’t referring to 1855.
I’ve listed the downtown Locust Street Theatre, but doubt there was still film in the 1950s there. /theaters/22730/
suburban Locust Theater??
Bill, unlike younger generations, I haven’t taken up smiley faces & the like.
I’m not sure which other deletions are referred to or who made them.

As Ziegfeld Man suggests, of course I was jesting!
