At the end of the “Go to Sleep” song it appears like Tom is sleeping with Bo Peep and of course this would have been a “No No” once the production code went into effect so it was cut from the film after 1934.
I went to both shows Saturday night and it was first rate. Great prints of the Wizard Of Oz and Babes In Toyland. Babes was 16mm but we got to see the rare uncensored version. A Christmas Carol had about 30 seconds cut from the print towards the end (Where Scooge tells the boy to buy the Turkey) but otherwise the print looked great. Always great to see Tom & Jerry on a big screen.
Yes it was but if the efforts had been sucessful I doudt if the Deluxe would have went back to showing regular films. It just would have closed down about 15 years earlier then it did.
I really do not remember the Benson showing XXX films but I guess its possible. I know when it was twinned they showed regular films. I would guess that the merchants on 86th street would have raised a great protest if the Benson showed XXX films so I doudt if it lasted to long.
Yes I agree. Three theatres all within a few blocks of each other and allof them are gone. With the Marboro closed there are no theatres anywhere in the area. What a shame.
I never remember seeing crowds there either which is suprising considering the Benson was located on a major shopping street and the elevated subway staion was right next to the theatre.
As i remember all they did was put a wall up splitting up the orchestra into two theatres. There was also new screens that were hung infront of the old stage. I am not sure if the orchestra pit in front of the stage was covered over. The lobby ticket office and consession stands were in the same place. I was only there once or twice after the Benson was twinned. I remember seeing a rerelease of “The Producers” there.
I remember the Deluxe as being in better shape than the Benson also. It was cleaner and even seemed more modern inside. While I never went there once it became a XXX house I kind of wish I would have went inside before it closed. It outlasted the Benson and the Oriental but unfortnatly as a porno theatre.
There will be a celebrity softball game at Keyspan Park on Sept.18 if you want to see the inside of the park. Unfortunatly the parachute jump will never operate again. Even if they could restore the ride, because of high insurance costs, a ride on it would cost about $20. You would have to hit a ball about 500 feet to reach it anyway.
I just checked the latest ‘Film Forum" calender for Fall-Winter and there will not be a Hollywood film untill Dec.2. (Paths Of Glory) They are in the midst of a Samuri festival so in late Oct. the Forum is having another 4 week Japanese Film Festival! 5 months without classic Hollywood films is just not fair to people like myself who buy yearly memberships to the Film Forum. I think Mr. Goldstein is a great programer but he really should vary the programs more so nobody has to wait almost half a year to see a genre of film. 6 months of foriegn films is just not right.
Al Jolson made an appearance at the Oriental to promote his film “Jolson Sings Again”. He also went to other Loews theatres in Brooklyn on the same day.

I thought Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert was on WNBC TV. I believe it followed Saturday Night Live in the late 1970’s.
The original “Crazy Eddie’s” store was located about a block from the Kingsway theatre.
The Bowling alley was on the sceond floor. The alley was destroyed in a fire that somehow did not damage the rest of the building.
It looks like it won’t be long untill there will only be a few theatres left in Brooklyn. Downtown and Sheepshead Bay.

An article in today’s daily news states that this theatre is up for sale and could close early next year.
This drive-in suffered major damage from the recent Hurricaine Wilma. It is closed for now but the owner hopes to re-open in a few months.
Attended Godzilla at the Jersey this weekend. Nice the see the organ has been installed. Anyone know when it will be in operation?

I would bet the stores on 86st probably forced the Benson to stop that practice.

The Stanley Theatre in Jersey City was completely restored even know it is used as a church.

Its more fun than the park near the ferry. And Nathan’s is right next door!
There is new construction at the former Bleecker site. Scaffolding covers the former entrance as well as where “Kim’s” was.
