Theatre was built on fill in 1979. Time to sue had long passed by.

Why not sue the architects?

Just to clarify, it was a collapsed floor in the lobby, not a ceiling. And there was no planned theatre nearby in 2005 when this happened.

I havent been by it in a few months, but there is a For Sale sign on the marquees. I have said many times this is the perfect sight for a 4 screen drive in.

P.S- Although they still pay full property taxes, maybe there is another tax deduction for vacant commercial property???

So, the ceiling caved in and they decided to totally abandon this theater??? Or maybe was the coming of Regal nearby more of what influenced their decision to not re open??? They own the property so why not re open the theater until Regal opens up instead of earning no money and paying real estate taxes??? Same situation with the Whitestone, Bronx location. Vacant for three years and the planned outlet mall is still not open…but supposedly the NYC Health Dept clsoed them down to due rodent infestation during one of the last major storms that pushed rats inside from the creek behind the theater..

@jkonka to answer your question according to the Borough of Sayerville Tax Collector’s online records the property in question continues to be owned by National Amusements out of Dedham, MA. They are also the majority owner of cable network operator Viacom and U.S. radio and television broadcaster CBS Corporation.

Interestingly, even though the theater has been closed for quite sometime and the property seemingly abandoned they are still on the hook for property taxes which currently is $139,410.00 per year which means that for the past 10 years they have spent approximately $1,394,100.00 in property taxes for a dead business.

It makes me sad to see that the location is going to be demo’d. I have a lot of memories of that theater from when I was growing up and always wished I had the funding to try to reopen it.

Recently I’ve seen a few service vans around the perimeter of the parking lot; I had hoped it was an attempt to maintain the site, but as I was searching I stumbled upon luxurypoint.com. I was in review of their site map and from the looks of it, the Amboy Multiplex Cinemas may not be here much longer. It is whited out of the map among the rest of the redevelopment and since regal cinemas is going to build a theater in the redevelopment area, it would seem that the multiplex would not be reused. Demolition seems to be inevitable.

That being said I would like to know if anyone would know of any way to take photos of the interior/exterior (with permission) or if anyone would happen to have more photos available. Also if I have my facts wrong please correct me. I truly do love this theater.

Drove by this place today on the way home from Red Bank. Interesting to see that someone is now vandalizing the roof top a/c units, just like what happened late in 2013 at the All Jersey Multiplex in Newark. You could also see numerous tire tracks in the snow in the unplowed parking lot. Copper must be paying a lot these days I guess.

There was a full page article in the NY Times from December 13th, 1991. “Plants are wilted, floor is a bed of spilled popcorn” Admission $6.50, Medium popcorn $2.75

Who owns this property?

Can anyone provide me with contact info?

I have an idea to revitalize this location for moviegoers.

Please post that information.

Thanks!

So I’m very curious about the current plans, if any exist for the future of the cinema. I’m currently a historic preservation student in Philadelphia but I’ve lived in Perth Amboy my entire life and I can remember going to the theater all the time. Maybe there can be an effort to preserve this building before they decide to completely do away with it. Any thoughts?

  1. I’ve been in the building within the past month. There’s a minor sinkhole in the lobby that hasn’t changed much at all since it’s closing.
  2. The building is still packed with stuff (seats, screens, etc.) And the only major problem is vandalists that broke in.
  3. The building is NOT (repeat: NOT) condemned. There’s a padlock on the front door that maintnance still goes into regularly.
  4. There is an ultimate tribute blog that started up recently. You can find it by just looking up Amboy Cinemas Blog on google (It’s the only one).

Hope this helps!

Yes heather, there is a sinkhole in the lobby in the area of the concession stand. Last time I was in there was in 2006.
