I went to Shep’s Deli once in the mid 80s, then years later I saw it was gone. I think it was east of Overland on the south side of Pico.

How ironic that part of the mall that’s construction closed this fine theater is now being closed…to open up a theater!! Truly full circle, indeed!

Michael

It looks as if my link to the Pacific Drive-In is not working, so here are the instructions for getting there…

1) Go to www.lapl.org
2) Click on Photo Collection
3) In the search field, type in “pico and westwood"
4) Scroll down to #8.
Note: #2 shows the old Firestone service station that use to exist on the corner of Pico and Selby where the current Washington Mutual is located.

Apparently there was a a drive in called the Pacific Drive-In on the corner of Pico and Westwood Boulevards. This picture was taken in 1934.

I lived on Military Ave in the ‘70s, within walking distance of the Picwood. I remember going to the Picwood Bowl, Chess & Games Unlimited (to play the new video game, “PONG”!) John Fine Cameras, Shep’s Deli, Sal’s Liquor (to buy football cards!), and other shops in the area. It seems like everything other than the Apple Pan are long gone! My favorite memories though have to have been the Picwood. AS a kid in the '70s, seeing great films with the fantastic seats…nothing could have been better. When I started dating, I took a girl to see “The Lonely Lady” starring Pia Zadora at the Picwood. This was in '83 and it must have been the last time I visited this theater. What a riot! It was opening night and the movie was so bad —in a good way — the audience was screaming and yelling lewd comments to the screen — nothing I care to repeat! And Pia Zadora showed up at the end and I recall one of the ushers or the manager having her sign the one-sheet on display in the audience. A truly bad film but a great way to end my memory of the Picwood!

At least the Apple Pan still stands.

The western extension of the mall is now closed. A 12 screen Landmark Theater complex is due to open in Summer 2007. I guess we’ve come full circle.

This is the best site in the history of the Internet!!! So much fun. I loved the Picwood – saw The Birds there, saw Midnight Lace there, saw Ken Russell’s The Boy Friend there, and on and on. I went to Hami (and Louis Pasteur and Crescent Heights – I lived by Pico and La Cienega and mostly frequented the Stadium, the Lido, and the Picfair. I used to love going to the Picwood in the early 60s because I’d go to Scot’s (or was it Scottie’s) burger joint next door – they had really cheap and excellent hamburgers), then just sit all afternoon in that glorious theater. I remember the neon sign very well, because whenever we’d come home from visiting relatives in Long Beach, you could see it for miles coming up the 405 (no tall buildings back then).

So nice to read these posts. Over the last few years I’ve written a thinly-veiled fictional trilogy of my childhood growing up in LA – all my childhood theaters play a big part in each book, and that includes the Picwood.

MERYL: I tend to favor the westerns and detectives I grew up to. I just don’t rate things like the AFI 100. When you project so many thousands of films over 20 plus years quality and quantity tend to all become one. I also favor many sci-fi which I will edit on my profile. I cannot rate theatres having been in 200 plus. I always liked the Pix in Hollywood…an incredible balcony and theatre. The only film I saw at the Picwood after 1961 was Point Blank with Lee and Angie both of whom I like. I don’t remember the few films I projected there because I rarely was sent there. I hope you send me an e-mail with questions and comments because I checked the box to allow members to e-mail me but not to put my e-mail on my messages like this. I can discuss films more thoroughly than in this public forum. Did you see SC/NOTRE DAME? I died 3 times and was revived!!

Hoppy, you did the profile update. Now I can see what your favorite movies are. Contact ( I think) is for private email.

MERYL: Along with other shortcomings like disliking suv’s and cell phones my experience with PC’s has not been good. If you tell me what to do to update and contact I will do it. Today I am worried about SC/NOTRE DAME.

Meryl: The first film I remember seeing there in the early 1950’s when they had the SATURDAY MATINEES FOR KIDS was UNEXPECTED GUEST which was one of the last 6 films with HOPALONG CASSIDY who starred in 66 films between 1935-1948. In Jr. Hi. I went to see MIGHTY JOE YOUNG with a girl in my neighborhood named Sharon Bovee. We both rode our Schwinn’s there. Pico and Westwood had more shops to visit than candy in a bottle. What an era and so many memories!!

Hoppy, I contrasted your picture of Picwood’s final show,
and Ken’s 1946 ‘Picwood newly built’ —
it’s hard to see that it’s the same theatre!

I added the LA TIJERA in Westchester, the ARDEN in Lynwood, a rare shot from 1937 of the new HARPER DRIVE-IN in Hollywood and a rare shot of a Detroit Drive-In in the 1930’s. My family hailed from Motor City before L.A.

It’s hard to believe looking at that post World War 2 shot of the Picwood, like Hoppy says— it’s so EMPTY! The building with the bowling alley/ arcade that was next door to the east of the theatre doesn’t look like it’s been built yet.
Think of that next time driving past the Westside Pavillion (in this case; Westside Two- west of Westwood Blvd.) on crowded Pico Blvd!

Ken: That is one of the greatest shots I ever saw. I have had 1 problem after another in Van Nuys for a month. Adelphia does one thing right…make continual mistakes. Today a tech cut a fiber optic wire and no tv for 4 hours. I have had very little Internet time between Adelphia and the LA power outage for over a month. I moved to Cheviot Hills in 1949 and even I don’t remember how empty the area was.
