Thanks ‘film’ for this great Hollywood Warner Cinerama Theatre photo. I was there to see Cinerama on the giant curved screen. The theatre just sits empty now.
Such a great Super Cinerama curved screen with curtains that worked then MR Syufy got rid of the union projectionists/janitors and made the giant screen smaller then the curtains never worked again. Hope they re open the place as It just sits empty. Thanks Bill for the photo.
Thanks ‘film’ must have been a great stage show. I wonder If they showed a movie also or was It just the Joyboys live? Looks like they just set up in front of the screen curtain at the Odeon Theatre.
Nice that the large downstairs screen at SF’s Presido Theatre has a 42 ft screen and they are proud of It. Now this is not such a big screen these days with the many special wide curved screens around the USA like the XD or RPX screens they are way wider and larger. Thanks Steve for the photo. Hope someday the owners can buy some used plastic letters so they don’t have to do all the color changes.
Looks like the old seats are going and the place will be a nightclub soon. Limited movies. The new lease APE gang does not even pop fresh popcorn. They just bring in bulk pre popped popcorn and put in little expensive brown bags and re heat in the old big Castro Theatre popcorn machine and charge big bucks. You think you are getting fresh popcorn this is not the case. The cold drinks are now given to you in cans $$$$.A sad day for movie lovers in SF. The seats are going per new commission ruling this week.
Great place to see Cinerama and to think the Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco is still open but without the huge curved Cinerama screen with curtains. Thanks Trolley for the photo.
The Century Theatre here is closing Friday June 16 2023. They had the best curved XD screens in the SF Bay Area. Not surprising as they never had a marquee outside to let you know that a large cinema was inside the Westfield Mall. A busy area, now only one movie theatre is left in downtown SF the AMC Metreon Theatre a block away. A sad day for movie lovers in SF. I doubt another movie chain will take over because the area has gone way downhill. Maybe a big gym or school will take over the spot? Goodbye Century SF 9 we will miss you! Save the large XD curved screen and put in the flat screen Drafthouse New Mission Theatre in SF. Move the speakers also CineMark will give them a good deal!
How sad this big cinema just sits empty in downtown Watsonville year after year. The old marquee sign taken off no longer with the big front FOX neon sign. You would think someone would come along and turn the former cinema into a night club, comedy club or Spanish entertainment music venue or run some classic movies from time to time. No It just lays empty and closed up. I guess waiting for another big earthquake to come along.
The lease has been taken over by CineLux Cinemas. They run theatres in Capitola, Scotts Valley, Los Gatos and in the South Bay San Jose area. A gold mine for movie lovers as It is the only theatre in the city of Watsonville at this time. Lets hope the new owners will up grade the place with Dolby Atmos or a mini Imax screen. Time also to bring the old drive in back.
I wonder if the United Palace is a non union theatre? The Tony’s knew they were coming here in late 2022 so I don’t think the move from Radio City to the Palace had anything to do with the current writers strike.
I bet the stage is not as big as Radio City and no stage lifts. Hope CBS TV shows wide shots of the theatre ect. They will probably cut the stage down in sections for the Tony awards live show.
Thanks David I wonder If this was one of the few theatres in the USA to show this film with 55 ml projectors or just a blow up to 35mm CinemaScope® Did the 55 prints have more then 4 ch mag stereo sound?
The semi new Imax screen here is not that big. The XD screen next door seems larger and has a better curve to it. They put in the Imax screen when the new Regal Stonestown opened up a few miles away with their 4DX, Screen X and RPX screens. No leg room at the Imax at Century Daly City. They crammed in seats so close in what was a regular size screen. You can’t read the reserved seat numbers on the seats. Good stereo split surround sound with deep base in the Imax auditorium.
If they can’t use the Cinerama Theatre name they can change to SUPERAMA It will fit in the neon sign light. Go with a different color not red white and blue. I think the Cinerama Inc people will let them keep the name with a fee.
Long closed Tara Theatre will re open soon now that Regal left the place stripped out. Owners of Plaza Theatre Atlanta are taking it over with a small remodel. Hope to show 70mm again!
Thanks Bill soon to open the New Vista Theatre with 35mm film projection. I wonder if they will put in 70mm projectors.

Thanks Kino another example how curtains in Europe look so nice with some color lights. You won’t find this in the USA.

Gigi ran in 4 track magnetic stereo sound at the Stage Door Theatre.

I wonder If anyone saved the art in the lobby when they tore down the theatre? Did It glow under black Light?
Looks like the lobby part is open now for some sort of kid camp.
Thanks Jim for the info. I think VistaVision had a few special projectors installed in some large theatres.

they took off the great neon marquee now will be a gym.
Is the screen curved or flat. Some photos make it look flat?
Thanks nice Cinerama curved screen.
One of the few Imax curved screens with curtains that work
