I was in the Tivoli and took some photos in the late 70’s shortly after they began demolition. I’ll see if I can scan them and post links.

The theater was in REALLY bad shape and I was told it had closed in the late 60’s after the riots. In fact, the whole neighborhood looked as if it had been bombed during the war. It was shocking!

The day after I went through the building, there was a news report that the stage wall had collapsed onto someones home directly behind the theater. I don’t recall if anyone was killed or injured.

I’m on your side of this issue. But, in the case of 3-D, digital makes sense. There’s no chance of operator screw up when they don’t have to worry about lens adjustments, convergence, etc.

Does this mean that “Tisi’s Top Terrors” will not be playing on Halloween weekend?

Here’s a parade from 1969:

Do you think the area has changed for the better?

Tony, thanks for sharing your memories of the great days of Passaic. I must point out one error in your comments: the Central had the furnished downstairs “Television Lounge.” I don’t believe the Montauk had any kind of basement space open to the public.

Newspapers. The last time I looked in the office, it looked like a storage area for old newspapers.

I guess they’re using it as a paper weight…

The plaque that was in the outer lobby at Loew’s Jersey was found at a local flea market sometime after the theater was sold to Hartz Mountain. It was bought and returned to Friends of the Loews about 15 years ago. To this day, they have yet to put it back on display where it belongs!

Try the Montauk in Passaic. It’s in great condition and last I heard, scheduled for demolition.

Not me, I haven’t been there since THE GREAT ESCAPE.

It was probably Phil Tisi, we look alike. In fact, many times on the street, people will stop me and say, “You’re Phil Tisi, aren’t you?”

I think her memory is a little hazy there. Some of the dialogue was looped, but most was not. I suspect that Zanuck ordered the accent change shortly after the start of production.

Ms. Dahl was sensational, but I wish the person who interviewed her had done some homework. He stated that JOURNEY was a low budget film which is far from accurate: it was an “A” picture from Fox all the way. He also speculated as to whether or not the film was intended as a vehicle for Pat Boone. It was. Boone originally had 5 songs in the film, but 4 were cut. (Boone’s production company worked with Fox on the film, and they were wise to realize that the pacing needed to be tightened.)

He also commented on the fabulous score and wondered if there was a soundtrack available on CD. There is, and it was released by Varese Sarabande in 1997.

A little bit of prep and research would have made the interview that much better.

MARTY (while protected for academy ratio) was composed for and originally presented theatrically in widescreen.

I just received word that Loew’s Jersey is presenting a free, 35mm screening of ISLE OF THE DEAD tonight. You can’t beat that price.

But better than that, the pre-show organ concert will be played by Bernie Anderson – one of the premier theater organists on the East Coast. Bernie never fails to entertain and this will be his debut on the restored Wonder Morton!

Hmmm, some titles are not exactly family friendly in that group!

I wonder if the new programmers know their audience?

Movie534: I’m not blaming you personally, and I know that you are doing your best. It’s just frustrating that they have such a great booth and SO much potential to do it right.

BobFurmanek commented about Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre on Mar 9, 2009 at 7:25 am

Why would a film programmer book academy ratio films when they don’t have the appropriate lens to present it properly? That’s very poor showmanship.

Dial M was intended for 1.85 presentation so I’m sure it looked fine.

Running DVD’s is pretty sad too. The Lafayette in Suffern, New York ran a beautiful 35mm print of DR. ZHIVAGO a few years ago.

With all the money spent on that booth, it’s a shame they couldn’t spring for a pair of lenses and plates to do this properly.

I just heard CITIZEN KANE was shown in 1.85. What the heck?!! That would totally destroy the compositions! How can they make such a presentation error?

ANY film produced before mid-1953 should be presented in 1.37.

I didn’t read anything in Warren’s post that was abusive. In fact, his comment about off-topic discussions was dead on. I stopped checking several pages on this site because of the extreme amount of non-theater related posts.
