Hope you can all make it to the BIG SHOW at the FOX on Sunday, August 23rd. See my post on CT/Fox for details. A show this big in that theatre should be breathtaking!
August 23rd at 2pm, The Fox will present “Those Were the Days”. The program will include Colonel Jack Moelman, Walter Strony and Lew Williams on the mighty wurlitzer. Also an audience sing-along, Laurel & Hardy movie, and a musical “Tribute to America”. $25 general admission, $35 for the mezzanine. What a Show!!! I won’t miss this one. Come one, Come all !!!!!
I just heard from a friend that the Genesee management is looking for an organist to play before shows. Does anyone know if they restored the barton and it must be in working order? I see where they resumed the movie series and you can buy tickets for events in person at the box office as well as the Chicago Theater in Chicago which means MSG is the new managment I imagine.
believe its standing whith nothing doing. A great theatre who needs a vision. Marcus movie corp moved out years ago as there headquartes. Took a look & tour last year, it was intact and does'nt need the millions that other theater needs pretty well kept, maby there are waiting for the new streecar line coming next year.Starting from Amtrack station & going down mainstreets were the actions are and then on to the eastside by the lake..Sounds great to me
A great movie house. Not as grand as the Marbro down the street. When the Marbro closed the marquee read visit the B&K State. There is a picture of that sign somewhere. Quite a number of stabbings forced the theatre to close for a time in the late 60’s & 70’s. No theatre can operate under those conditions.
I was in this beautiful movie palace last fall and when the organ appeared before the film it was magic! When he played the huanted song that was in the film on the pipes as the crowds were leaving was something you do not get these days. You cannot imagine unless you were there. The organ souded in prime form. I live in the mid-west and can’t wait to get back. A 70mm film ! Wow. Only LA has showings regularly in that format. Think I’ll join
“Friends of the Loew’s”. Imagine seeing “Ben-Hur” at the Jersey??
at
WHAT LANGUAGE WAS THAT ?? How does Loew’s Jersey keep the Loew’s name(I am glad they do ). The Kings is a beautiful theater no doubt, but the Jersey is out of this world beautiful with a pipe organ that will thrill you over & over. Kings should re-think the offer to give
the original massive theater organ back to the people that own the Kings…It really would be the icing on the cake!!
Great idea NYer about Disney taking over operations like the El Capitan in LA. It would put the Ziegfeld back on the map. Maybe you can write to someone about the posibility.
I imagine they will leave the main floor as is for people like to stand & scream when they see a rock band or other groups. The balcony of course will have seats. There comes the 1500. Similar to the Congress theatre here in chicago. They can cram more in and put in bars where the real money is pouring in. I might be wrong but this would explain the 4,000 into 1,500. Anyway it sounds so very exciting. Marquee & vertical put back is always a thrill.
Thanks Orlando for the great answers. I thought neon came along in the 30’s. Now I know I was wrong. Years and years later LED is the fashion of the times.
I find it strange that Radio City stopped showing first-run films into the late 70’s. Whenever I visted NY, I always went to RCMH and during the week they had great crowds and not just for the christmas & easter shows. The stage shows were wonderful and plenty of tourists. The huge curtains closing after the film was over and then re-opening for the stage show was a delight!
Great pictures! I don’t know how the oringal marquee looked when opened, but this one needs more bulbs on top, not just a faded neon! I bet they didn’t even have neon in 1929.
I was so happy to be in New York around Halloween. I used a family car and drove myself to the Loew’s to see “The Shinning”. What a beautiful theater !! The organ sounded wonderful as he played for an hour for the crowds were huge outside. A night I will never forget. The group that runs the theater are to be hailed for their effort keeping this beautiful theater alive. Congrats to all !!
A “For Sale” sign now sits on the site of the Paradise. If you google earth, I believe you will see as I do the lobby marble glazed floors among the grass that has grown with it. The grocery store used the tiles I believe. Enlarge the photo. I recently visited the Avalon Theater in Chicago during an “Open House Chicago” and walked on the floor of the lobby. It did remind me of the Paradise in many ways. It was a great feeling and brought sadness that the Paradise was gone forever. I wonder if the lower lobby is still there intact since the floor remains. Sorta like the Titanic.
Wonder who will pay for the heat/ac to be fixed? Ald. Cullerton is retiring I heard so the city’s help may be off the table. Anyway I hope the classic movie people return someday to show their wonderful programs!
After touring the Regal today, I drove down Cottage Grove to 63rd st. to see what was left of the Tivoli’s next door neighbors. Looked like a hotel or apartment building just north of the Tivoil about 20 stories high that was burned right through. Windows gone and in a very sad state. Reminded me of Detroit.

LuisV is right. A neon/bulb vertical is the finishing touch that a theatre needs. The show really does begin with the signage outfront!

Amazed as I drove right past it. The vertical is long gone and now is a church. The building is still beautiful

Does Loews still have the large auditorium decorated in red by the front of the complex? Is there a loews company anymore? Thanks
Thanks for report on the neon. Did the original marquee have neon do you know? Chasing bulbs(not led)look so much better and so movie palace like.

I wonder how this will affect the Uptown theater project with the Congress, Portage & Patio doing live shows also.
Sure needs more detail to match the interior. A nice vertical sign wouldn’t hurt either.
I am looking forward visiting & seeing the Christmas show this saturday night at 7:30pm. 12/20/14. Are you going Scott?

Thanks for posting Rick. Great to read all the movie ads of the day.
