How the West Was Won in three projector Cinerama nearly sold out could it be the combination advertising and running the original film version? The digital shows of Cinerama films don’t sell nearly as well same publicity. 2001 the film version 70mm nearly sold out.
Please update the Arclight Hollywood 14 opened on March 22, 2002, Thursday, July 27, 2000 the Cinerama Dome show The Patriot in SDDS 8 channels, then July 28 thru July 30, the dome had a festival prior to the expansion with Arclight, reopened on March 22, 2002. I’m posting the last weekend prior to renovation in the photos section.
Ask jsittig70mm he should know the history. The curve of the screen at the dome is extreme. In the past there were problems with light spill side to side.
It’s just an experience seeing a Cinerama print off the original negative. The difference between the Cinerama footage and the Ultra-Panavision scenes is something to look for.
Curmudgeon, the original installations, it seems, included a deeply-curved screen, deeper than the curvature of the screen at the Dome. Perhaps the Dome’s screen curvature does not result in light from either extreme side washing out the image on the opposite side. It is also possible that many Cinerama installations for one reason or another, could not install a screen with the prescribed curvature. If so, the notion of a “true Cinerama presentation” might not be a meaningful description.
When “one projector” Cinerama was about to begin in Detroit, the louvered screen was replaced by a solid one. I watched them do the replacement.
Jsittig70mm I understand the Dome screen is a single sheet. As original 3 strip Cinerama utilised vertical strip screens to avoid shadowing, can the Dome seriously advertise true Cinerama presentation?
I was in charge of projection at Pacific Theatre and ArcLight for 34 years. This years 7 film series will present 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY in 70mm and HOW THE WEST WAS WON in it’s original 3 strip Cinema process. The other films in the series are digital prints, all of which except LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, are rectified for the down angle and curve of the Cinema screen. Horizon lines will not dip in the middle. We made digital copies of the 5 Cinema travel adventures and WINDJAMMER for the cost of making a photochemical print of 1 title. With only 3 theatre in the world that can show 3 strip Cinerama, you can understand why we did what we did. We will also be adjusting the bottom masking before each show in order to fill the entire screen. Hope to see you all there. John Sittig
The Dome was built to run 3 projector Cinerama or the Ultra Panavision version. The three projectors were never installed but the portholes and projector stations were installed. They could have installed the projectors and run three strip. The original screen was a Cinerama screen made up of hanging strips. There has been many modifications over the years.
They the powers that be are trying hard to push digital. Digital is the new new thing and it does keep getting better. It’s nice to see a film presentation especially if it’s good. Turner film festival ran a print of sound of music at the Legion theater on highland. This was a 70 mm print off the original negative on Kodak vision three stock. It was incredible.

to Roger A.– thanks for your reply. a question. it is my understanding that when Arclight took over management of the Dome they renovated it so it could show the original 3-strip Cinerama films since it was built in 1963 to exhibit the 70MM Cinerama films. so why have some of the screenings of the original 7 3-striup films been digital and not on film?
That’s what I’m led to believe. I have campaigned for the film version I know they have a print. And it’s listed as film

to Roger A.– if I understand your post the Dome will be screening HTWWW on actual film not digital which a number of the Cinerama screenings have been.
Tickets are selling fast all the good seats are going fast. It great they finally listened and are running it it the original three projector format.
I hope it is 3 strip also, Roger. Being on a weekday, it will probably be an evening showing, but I sure wish they would do it in the afternoon. Evenings are OK for local residents who can drive there, but for someone from out of town who needs to use public transportation, it’s not so good.

The in70mm.com website reports that the Dome will show the Cinerama flicks Windjammer and Seven Wonders of the World with digital projection on Sept 9, and How the West Was Won (maybe in 3 strip) on Oct 1st.
Has anyone seen OUATIH here yet? Since it is in 70mm here, I wonder if they will use the entire screen and did they leave the curve intact with the image filling the bottom corners…..I am thinking of giving the Dome one last chance…..
Speaking of which Flix70, one of the scenes takes place outside the Dome pre-megaplex days. I saw the movie in regular 4k at AMC in Rockaway, NJ and noticed some bad masking at the top of the screen but nothing major. The picture was sharp and colors were bright while the sound mix is very good 5.1.

Sounds kinda like with how AMC treats their screens in bigger multiplexes these days…unless if its dolby uncropped, prime, reald 3d and imax.
Terrywade, you nailed it about the Dome. That screen is a joke since they installed the new laser projector. Also, they are only using about 64 feet of the 86 foot screen, and the way the bottom corners turn up take me out of the movie. I just stare at the screen and wonder why it looks so bad. I have not been here in years, and this was my absolute favorite in LA. Its a shame really. I have brought the curve up with Managers there and the response is that since the screen is so curved, this is better for viewing….ridiculous.

on the 1st page of the photo section there’s an ad for Camelot which had a decent roadshow run at this theater. in fact vindanpar thought so and added “it pretty much died as a roadshow in New York”. how is 34 weeks “pretty died as a roadshow in New York”?
Just visited again the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood. Same old problem with no lights on when you come into the theatre to find your numbered seat. They have the blue lights turned on so low on the curtains and the lights on the gold ceiling turned way down. The worst is the DCP scope picture. They have masking on the bottom right and left part of the curved screen going up words. I have been to many large curved screens lately and you don’t see this problem on the bottom. I think they can correct this bottom problem by doing a pre test curve alignment to push the curved image down more to fit the corners not loop the image up? They have seemed to have put in these new cheap looking surround speakers that have the grill off that shine the treble cones. The old surround speakers were hidden behind the side wall curtains. Seems the Cinerama Dome had way better base a few years ago. The new 3D scope Disney movie ‘Toy Story 4’ did not have the deep base or was it the speaker set up at the Dome? At least the image looked bright and crisp. Pacific needs to turn up the lights and correct the bottom curve problem. Go check other theatres that have the curve but don’t curve up the bottom corners, see what they are doing to correct the image on the bottom corners. .

Krakatoa East of Java opened on Wednesday June 26, 1969 at the Cinerama in Manhattan. I checked the opening add using NewYork Times Time Machine. Nothing is mentioned concerning reserved seats or reserved performances. There were 4 shows daily at 11:30 AM, 2:30, 5:30 & 8:30 PM. Extra performance on Friday & Saturday at 11:30 PM.
