I attended the Circle over the holiday weekend while staying for the weekends at a friends summer place. It is a great old place kept very clean and with a fully stocked concession stand. I saw a double bill of “Transporter 2” and “Wedding Crashers” for only $6. My only complaints are that the screen desperately needs to be painted, there is rust where the sections are joined together. The other thing is they play no drive-in candy snipes and no trailers except for the ones that come attached to the feature. There was a short intermission between films that was lacking all those fun shorts we all loved.

Don’t call me an “arm chair preservationist,” I have been working for five years on two projects in my community to save the Forest Hills Tennis Stadium and the New York State Pavilion from the 64 Worlds Fair. The difference is I am willing to have my taxes raised to restore a historic 1920s Tudor stadium where the US Open was originally held. On the other hand you have small town mentality and worry about a few pennies of your tax dollars. Enjoy the bliss of ignorance, I guess you done know any better. You could never replace a historic theatre like the Dupage even with an unlimited amount of money. Enjoy your mediocrity.
Well the only good thing coming from this is we won’t have to hear all this nonsense. Enjoy your Wal*Mart or whatever other thing you will get and live in your mediocrity of malls and multiplexes. Someday your children will regret such ignorant parents for tearing down history. Your always welcome to visit historic places in more civilized towns then Lombard.
The whole front and orchestra was draped and the new screen was slightly in front of the proscenium with Austrian drapes that went up and down. The opening for the fire doors (the doors were set way back) had the drapes crisscrossed to allow people to walk in and out and also the air conditioning return ducts were back there so you could feel a breeze when you sat in the front. The scope picture was created from a top masking that came down and was really quite small. The flat picture was decent.
A few posts ago there was a lot of talk if the IFC should use a local 306 projectionist. I just read this post on the Nostrand page that may help make a decision.
This was a first run theatre Philip, not second.. except maybe at the end.
I remember lining up to see GREASE here.
They had painted birds on the ceiling.. it made you ask.. is that BUTTER in my popcorn!
An interesting fact about this theatre…
A few times I saw a movie a second time here… it was during the week and there was hardly anyone in the theatre….
In order to go home early, the projectionist would just SKIP a film roll!
How odd it seems to see a film saying “direct from Radio City” and then playing the Alden, but 1971 was probably right before it went into it’s decent of horror and kung-fu films View link

What an incredible place, Century’s never had anything even close to this as far as opulence goes. Thanks Warren for those pictures.
