The red neon sign above the candy counter that said REFRESTMENTS fell last month off the mirror and broke. Almost hit a popcorn server. Mark the manager tells me they are having the sign re made. The West Wind Syufy gang is spending money to fix up the place. A good tax rite off for them as the Syufy’s mainly own malls these days were their former drive Inns were. West Wind had to buy a new ice machine also they are re doing the lobby elevators and a new LED marquee will be coming soon. New laser projectors have been put in space #3 & #4. They are replacing the light bulbs in the marquee tower to color LED bulbs. Hope new glow rugs will be put in soon and some neon lobby ceiling lights repaired. Santa Cruz needs a 4DX or Screen X installation this is the cinema to have them in downtown Santa Cruz CA.
They can still show 35mm or 70mm 6 track mag film movies here and the curtains still work. Don’t show as many film prints anymore most DCP. Nice to hear the pipe organ before the feature starts. Thanks NS for the image photo.
Thanks Kino too bad they didn’t put in a large curved type D-150 screen like they had before. Tiny screen now. Those Dolby Atmos speakers on the ceiling look junky strange on the deco ceiling. At least I have been told they put in blue stage curtains during the latest remodel job. Does anyone know If they replaced the courtyard water fountains? Thanks
D-150 curved screen was such a great screen system. The new remodel 11/23 small screen is nothing like It was. Hope the Hollywood Cinerama opens soon with It’s huge curved screen.
Another St Francis Theatre was on Market ST in SF. It was torn down many years ago. This former theatre was Lefty O'Douls Buffett near the St Francis Hotel Union Sq.
Former Todd-AO UA SF Theatre just sits closed year after year. They just re painted and took all the graffito off. Removed the blade sign as It was all rotten last year. Time for a smart entertainment business to take It over and open again.
Nice photo Kino. Too bad Netflik spent a ton of money doing the 3 year remodel and they didn’t put back a nice small neon marquee out front to tell everyone what is playing inside. Just like the Chinese Theatre up the street they took off the neon marquee and tried to make the front look like it was. Many tourists go by daily and they have no idea what is going on inside. Lets hope the street people don’t trash the new courtyard. They probably did not replace the courtyard tile fountains either. At least we hear they did put in a nice blue stage curtain. Let’s see if the projection staff knows the proper way to open and close them.
Thanks Miss Drive In Sarah for the Honolulu Cinerama Theatre photo. The owners the Formans/Consolidated Theatres needed to keep this place open and show ‘SOUTH SEAS ADVENTURE’ in Cinerama with the new DCP curved version for all the tourists. I think the building is still there but no longer with the huge Cinerama curved screen and pink curtains inside.
Those new Dolby Atmos ceiling speakers on a string look so bad. There are other ways they could have mounted them. Put in the attic ceiling or aimed from top side walls tilted towards the center of the seating area below. I bet they won’t even show that many movies in Dolby Atmos sound. Hope to see some 70mm films in 6 track stereo surround not 35mm blowups. Would have been nice also If they had put in a curved screen like they had for Todd-AO or D-150. Netflik spent a ton of money and put in a semi small flat screen and probably no color effect lights.
Thanks ‘film’ for the ad. This was a great movie in 3D saw as a kid at the Golden State United CA Theatres Fruitvale Theatre in Oakland CA. My first 3D film. You can now buy It restored on Blu Ray 3D DVD If you search around. Loved the 3D effects and the surround sound at times. Watch out for the snakes.
A sad day for SF Market ST Theatres that had to take down or make their marquees flat. They say to make Market ST better looking. Thanks James Martin & Steve. At least the huge Fox Theatre up the street did not have to do this they already tore her down a big mistake.
Yes one of the best 3D rich color films ever made. I watched as a kid at the long gone Golden State Fruitvale Theatre in Oakland CA. My first 3D film. Great use of the then brand new stereophonic surround sound wall side speakers. Loved the echo sound effects from the hot desert used in Inferno. One of the few 20th Century Fox 3D movies.

Had a great curved TODD-AO screen then D-150.
Former Grand Circus Theatre downtown Detroit.
Former Cinerama Theatre for the Detroit area. Opened after NYC.

The Castro Theatre is now closed for almost two years for s big remodel job. Can’t wait to see all the improvements.

Thanks Ryan nice semi curved screen
Let’s hope they put some color bulbs in the ceiling light not just shine white spotlights up to It.

Are the fountains working any color lights in the water?

I guess they do have a new curtain as a friend saw It move the other night. I wonder if the new screen is larger then the last one they had?

Does anyone know does the new Egyptian Theatre have curtains now this photo looks like It does?
I wonder if the screen is any larger inside after this new remodel. I don’t think they put in stage curtains. Hope to see some 70mm films coming up.

Thanks Kino another bad Hollywood mistake not keeping the dragon neon marquee up
Thanks film for the photo. Too bad we have not many movie theatres left in the USA with such a nice curved screen and curtains to match.

Thanks Lou needs color lights!
