I photographed the remains of the Varsity Theatre late last year. Check out some of my pictures and a short write up of the theater at: After the Final Curtain
No, that’s not what happened with the organ. It was donated to ATOS, and ACE bought it from them. Once more funds are available it will be reinstalled in the theater. However, due to a modern HVAC system taking over one of the organ chambers, it will not have organ pipes, but will be a digital organ.
I’ll be co-hosting a photo workshop at the Victory Theatre in Holyoke, MA on June 27. The last two workshops we held at the theater sold out pretty quickly so if you’re interested get your tickets soon. A portion of the proceeds raised will be donated to the theater to help the restoration effort. We’ve raised over $1,600 so far this year!
Mark – How sure are you about her name being spelled with an “a”? I’ve only seen Dornan used in captions, but I read an interview with her about her work with Loew’s Inc that spelled it Dornin.
The new owners of the New Regal/Avalon Theatre in Chicago are trying to reopen the theater as a performing arts center. They’ve launched a crowd funding campaign on Kickstarter to raise the remaining $100,000 needed to open the theater.
I’m saying that person is wrong, and the auditorium is still there. You can see it clearly on google maps (dated September 2014) or just look up the job permits on the New York City Department of Building’s website. There are demolition permits, but they have not been approved yet, so nothing has been demolished yet.
It’s been gutted since I photographed it, Mark. There really isn’t anything left to restore.

I’d say it’s most likely from the late 90s – early 2000s as the parking lot behind the theater went in around then.
I visited the Fox Theatre almost two years ago. Check out my post about the theater at After the Final Curtain
