I drove by the other day.Looked in rear stage door.(had a stage)The sight I saw was truly heart breaking.The roof had now collapsed over the main auditorium.The mees was MASSIVE and unneccessary.This place could have been saved and become the center peice of an area with a lot of potential,rather than the sleazy aura it radiates now.
HOW DO YOU DO THAT?You could find a picture of a bigfoot,probably.NOW,I’ve listed a new theater in Lynchburg,Va.Post one of that beauty-and it truly is.
Nearby is a much more attractive theater building being used for some retail/and or office application.A handsome brick structure with some interesting statuary.
I mentioned this theater on another Roanoke listing years ago.The building still looks good,but was LONG ago converted to office space.Doesn’t really look like a theater,per se,unlike the Salem Theater.The one movie I remeber seeing there was the semi-grim Swedish Elvira Madigan.
I was THRILLED to watch the clean up take place,see the re-opening.There are a few,very few,closed drive ins that COULD reopen,if the care,interest and money were availible.Nostagia is the key to get something like this to work.I haven’t noticed any publicity in Richmond about this going on in Keysville.
Passed by this sad sight today.The building still stands,the lot is still clear.Blackstone is a fairly sad place though,overall,with a number of closed textile-related plants.
I advocated here previously for a SEPERATE listing of REAL MOVIE PALACES that show REGULARLY scheduled films,notjust the occassional old movie or film festival.By the way,go to the Byrd website to learn about the big fund raising gala coming soon.
I have walked around this building several times.It appears to be very sound,but little used by some civic club.Would be a great venue for a summer playhouse and classic movie vemue,due to the HUGE amount of summer tourism in this scenic Eire Canal village.Being the 2nd most popular historical area for tourism related to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints,you have a huge deluge of tourists in the summer months.During the two week span of a mind-blowing out door drama there,you could have turn-away crowds,but the steady stream for several months would make for a valid idea.The “night life” in the area is almost nil,so such a project might be a doable.
Mr.Memory,You ARE the marvel of mystic oracles.I am always in awe of your ability to pull up knowledge others just don’t have.I think of you each time I pass the Byrd.HEY! We should schedule a movie party there.
I got some great shots of this theater from Twig’s OLD ROANOKE website and directly from him.It had a double balcony and LOOKED bigger than the stated seating number.It looked magnifecent.I know it was gone by 1960.There was another real beauty very near on Campbell,the Academy.(or Music Academy?)

Sure looks similar to the one at Ft.Douglas,Ut.
