In the book entitled IMAGES OF AMERICA CHICAGO ENTERTAINMENT BETWEEN THE WAR 1919-1939 by Jim and Wynette Edwards ISBN : 0738523305 published by Arcadis an imprint of Tempus Publishing Inc.
On page number 85 there is a very nice picture of the Randolph
The photo is courtesey of The Historical Society of America,Elmhurst,Illinois it is a picture of the marquee and it shows the whole buld.
The EL train in the picture metioned above could be a Pulliman car on the “ENGLEWOOD BRANCH” witch is now the GREEN LINE ASHLAND 63rd
When the picture was taken the “ENGLEWOOD BRANCH” was part of the SOUTH SIDE RAPIT TRANSIT . The cars in the pic could be eather Wooden or 4000 ser Pullman cars.
To branches were approved one was to leave the main line between 55th and 59th street an head in a generly eastern direction and to end south of 63rd between Wenthworth and Walace witch if i am right puts the picture at 63rd and Halsted
If the map is right and i think it is, whare the midwest was is now eather a parking lot or a thrift store.
The map puts it by the CTA train station if this is wright it is as i have sayed it is now eather a parking lot or a thrift store .
The thrift store was an A&P food store this was in the late 70s or early 80s
Also i also think that the high side attraction boards were removed durring the restoration, also the vertical sign is not the orginal one i think it is lighter than the first one and the marquee i think now has a sort of a piller think happing on the street level. If i rember right thire was a whole page in the Sun-Times or may be the Tribune i am not sure witch one. Thanks again
I saw in the picture from the post above that the name on the vertical sign whare the B&K would be it says PLITT whan did PLITT take over from B&K?
Thank you for your time
Vintage Bob , No worries thay bring back memories for me as well
but the real thanks goes to CAM and the person who took the time to post them . thanks for your time. :)
Dear Cam, Thank You for posting the address for the sight that you did, not only did it show pics of the Granada but it showed pics of other theatres that i could not recall what thay looked like.
Wonderfull, thank you once more.
Dear Vintage Bob , Their are pics of the int of the Brightion thanks to a posting on the “Granada” page of this site posted by CAM.
the web address is www.mekong.net/random/theatres.htm
thay can be found under the SET 9 box. Thank you for you time .
Also if you want picture of the inside of the Orential try the yellow pages in the front of the book their is a few pages for theatres and if i recall rigt their is a pic of the Orential small but it may just give you an idea.
This is true, the dress circle and the loge mostly when you are on the loge floor and you look up you then get the point of the 1 ½ stories. But it realy is not that high but if you have a problem as i said before ask to speak to the House MGR.
Other then that have fun and enjoy the show.
TO reginamon :
If you would like to see the Orential Balc pic you can try the broadway in chicago site that is the offical site for the Orential if you look at the top of the profile you will see a link for it onder related websites. If that cant halp you when you get to the theatre before you go to your ticked seat ask to speak to the HOUSE MGR. you might be able to get a relocation pass for your self but not the whole group. But as i sayed before before you go to the balc ask to speak to the HOUSE MGR. and see what he/she can do .
Have a great time and enjoy the show. :)
A P.S. to my post above,
The Eric Zorn web blog is “ A Change of Subject"
And the "Prince Castle Hamburgers” were square, the ice-cream was also square.
And “CockRobin” was the 2nd encarnation i think that their are still some around. Thank you for your time:)
As Per PAUL FORTINIs comment on Jan 14th 2007
I think the name of the hamburger place that you were refering to was "PRINCE CASTLE HAMBURGERS" not "KING CASTLE" if you "Google"
"Prince Castle Hamburgers" you will come a cross something from the Tribs Eric Zorn a web blog called “CHANG OF SUBJECT” he and the people who post memories of the past mention “Prince Castle”.
It was eather the 1st encarnation on the “COCKROBIN” chain or may be the 2nd i am not sure, only thing is that what i find is that the Ice Cream was square i am not sure about the hamburgers. Also could the theatre be eather the UA or the LOOP?
Thank you for your time :)
Thank Your post, it sheds some more light on to the Rialto.
If you find out any thing else please post it.
Also did the Trib say anything in detail about the ordinance violations, their must have ben a whole bunch if it had more then the Iroquois did. I guess that thay used the Chicago as “tie in” to the name of the show. Well thank you for your time.
The Chicago History Musiume has some photos but i am not sure if thay are of the in side i bleve that thay are dated 1958 May 28 and have a call # of HB-21232PPL HB-21232PPN or something like that if you go to their sight you might find out some more information the frim that took the pic in question is Hedrich-Blessing and thay sitll are around the sdress for them is WWW.HEDRICHBLESSING.COM i would try the CHM first and then try the firm above.
Thank You for your time :)
I just hope that the Ramova can be saved and turned it to somethng that shows off the glory that is the Ramova after all it IS the sister to the music box. I guss what i am getting at is i hope that it does not fall the way of the Colonly whare it just siting their all borded up wating or the way of the Brightion Park demolished and all that is on this spot is an empty lot,or if you prefer the Uptown, Granda or a whole lot of wonderful theatres that just becuse it is not in the “Theatre Dist.” it must not be worth looking at.
The Romova as well as a lot of “Local” theatres can and should be saved and used in an artistic mannor. Thank You for your time :)
Does any one know the name of demoltion Co. ?
Some times when the Co. is contracted to demo a buld.
When the buld in question is in the middle the Co. takes pic for the record and for the web sight or use in getting more work.
Sort of a “look what we can do” thing.
I recall going to this drive-in when i was a child also i recall how people would bring folding chairs and sit on the bridge at 31st street and watch the movie.
