The opening date for the Greenpoint was Oct. 10th, 1908. The first major alteration to the theatre was Feb. 1918 when it got a new marquee.
Looking for any photos (Newspaper Ads, etc) of this movie theater.
I remember going to the Theater before it was abandonded. I hung out in Greenpoint in the 60’s but I also went to the Meserole Theater down the block. I remember a clothing shop next to the RKO Greenpoint Theater and a Loft’s candy shop on the corner of Manhattan ave and Noble Street. My polish girlfriend Paulette lived on Noble Street. That is a different kind of vertical, very short and chunky. This is another beautiful old place ground to dust, thanks for these awesome pics Warren.
What is a theatre without popcorn. The secret code referred to in the flyer would change with each episode. At the time the system used by the theatres proved popular with youngsters as this was happening during WWII.
Was there ever a theatre in Greenpoint on the street that ran parallel to Manhattan Avenue, one block west or one block closer to the east river? I remember in the 80’s working behind a florist’s shop on Manhattan Avenue. The back of the florist’s shop abutted a the back of a building that looked an awful lot like a movie theatre. I don’t even know if this building was open when I was there back in ‘89, but someone told me it was a roller rink. I don’t know if the building was always a roller rink, but it looked just like a theatre. The street would have been Franklin Ave./Street.
The Greenpoint theatre is not officially listed as a full time movie theatre until 1925.
The RKO Greenpoint Theatre is located at 825 Manhattan Ave. and it seated 1673 people.
