Cineworld have said that they are waiting for permission from their landlord before the transfer of ownership to Empire can take place.

Still no sign of when this is going over to Empire. Listings have appeared for next week and bizarrely two of the films are also showing at the former Empire Leicester Square, often at similar start times. Surely better to offer more choice?

With a bit of cleanup this could be a great place to see a movie…Screen 1 has depth height and atmosphere that the Empire 1 and Vue screens are lacking – and with the Odeon Leicester Sq due for a refurb this could work…like anything it needs care and some investment…

yes as the Carlton. What I really am looking for are photos of the actual screens at these wonderful movie palaces of 60sLondon’s West End. No One seems to have images of the Carlton, Astoria or Metropole with their large 70mm screens back then!!

As in the Carlton, Cultman? I have many adverts from the 60s with the Carlton logo and would be willing to post up if cinematreasures members would like.

it needs a lot spent on it to bring it up to date.I am sorry to see The EMPIRE name disappearing the Leicester Square showcase. I would rather Cineworld Haymarket reverts back to its original name and a single screen!

Looks like this page has been renamed prematurely – despite Cineworld announcing the various Empires transferring to them from this weekend, nothing has been said about Haymarket and in fact they have released listings for next week. Wonder how long Cineworld will hold onto Haymarket for? For Unlimited members the overlap period will definitely be great in terms of choice!

Transferring to Empire Cinemas, presumably from 12 August.

Programming has taken a real turn for the worse lately, mostly consisting of relatively mainstream yet second-rate films that seem to run for weeks on end, with the odd Bollywood film thrown in. Curious as to what their strategy is.

Seems to have abandoned its typical programming of the less mainstream films and is showing pure Hollywood stuff now, and seemingly doing quite well out of it. But structually this place is just limping along… the ceiling on the way down to screen two is still water damaged and crumbling, and rather than replace the foam that’s come away from certain armrests they’ve just put black tape over the wood!

Might we see some kind of refurb or rebranding announced shortly after Picturehouse Central opens?

Does anyone have any photos of the screen when the Carlton was a single screen in the 50’s-70’s ? Thanks

Ah yes found the article now, thanks. Since I’ve started working on the King’s Road I’ve started to frequent that cinema, and it’s not a bad little place.

Where’s the news about Chelsea from?

looks like only a few more years remain as it is with, The Screening Rooms scheduled for 2017..which will turn this into a £20 plus ticket cinema with no unlimited card..

TSR 5 could mean, the screening rooms… which is a upmarket cineworld brand so with Cineworld Chelsea being knocked down & Haymarket turning into the screening room..the west end unlimited card won’t be worth a rub..great

Cineworld annual report has a section on new openings, and says “Haymarket TSR (5)”. Presumably this means total refurbishment and turning 3 screens into 5. I wonder how they will do this? Hoping they don’t dare carve up screen 1! The site does need some serious TLC though.

At long last the missing plaster in screen 1 has been replaced, but not yet painted to match.

Photos taken by English Heritage in 2001 including the former circle bar, now used as storage. Lots of water damage which seems to be recurring. http://viewfinder.english-heritage.org.uk/search/reference.aspx?uid=144281&index=384&mainQuery=cinema&searchType=all&form=home

Tweeted today about it being a shame that a big chunk of the plasterwork has recently fallen down at the back of screen 1 and the cinema needing TLC or a refurb and Cineworld Haymarket tweeted back: “We very much agree! We’re working on getting building improvements underway soon…”

Wonder what that’ll bring? Just structural fixes or something more?

Screen 3 went digital in of last year.
Screen 1 likely has a damp smell due to a leak that was never fully fixed which can sometimes drip heavily when it rains.
