from your comment on august 7,2010;
STAR WARS played at the Parkview Twin first-run on June 16,1977. It was one of five exclusive engagement running of the film playing here in the Carolinas, and one of them was here in Winston-Salem. Other cities within North Carolina didn’t get the film until July 1,1977.
About it’s re-release:
The Thruway was not one of the cinemas that played STAR WARS as a re-release. The re-release of the film STAR WARS played at two theatres in Winston-Salem from July 21,1978 until September 1,1978. There are listed below:
-Reynolda Cinema 1 & 2
-Parkview Twin
-Bright Leaf Drive-In(Mount Airy)
*I have the information.
COMING ATTRACTIONS FOR THE PARKWAY THEATRE was from the August 31,1965-September 1, 1965 edition of the Winston-Salem Journal,Winston-Salem,North Carolina.
I saw THE RETURN OF THE JEDI opening day at this theatre in DOBLY STEREO. It was a fantastic moviegoing experience especially those who ditched school to see it the day it opened. I was junior in high school back in 1983 when me and some buddies saw it during the 11:30am early matinee with the lines snaked around the cinema.
The cinema opened on November 24,1971 with the premiere attraction of “SKIN GAME” starring James Garner.
The coming attractions during its grand opening were the exclusive Fayetteville engagement showings of:
“GONE WITH THE WIND”
“BEN-HUR”
“DOCTOR ZHIVAGO”
“2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY”
Also coming attractions as well: Walter Matthau in “KOTCH” Yul Brenner in “CATLOW” David Lean’s “RYAN’S DAUGHTER”
GONE WITH THE WIND played at the Carolina Theater on January 29,1940 as a Reserved Seat Engagement. It was one of two theatres within the state that played it as a roadshow. The other was the Ambassador Theater in Raleigh.
This theatre got a lot of the Disney product too. This was a family-friendly style theatre with the occasion action-adventure-comedy genre that gets booked.
The Cardinal was one of several “Ultravision” theatres that ABC Southeastern opened during the 1970’s. Last owned by Carmike Cinemas when it closed in 1999.
This was a nice theatre when ABC and Plitt had it.
Stewart and Everett also had another twin cinema that operated in the town…one of two theatres that were in Rocky Mount. One was the Englewood Twin, aka Cinema 1 & 2,and the other was the Oakwood Twin which is NOT listed on this site that opened around 1975 or 1976.
This was one of several “Ultravision” theatres under ABC Theatres. In closed in 1994 when it last operated under Carmike Cinemas as a three-screen cinema.
Chuck 1231:
I will find the exact date to the ad for the grand opening of the Trans-Lux Theatre in High Point, and when I do I will revised the following information. In the meantime,I have revised the following information for three High Point theatres(The Towne Theatre, The Martin Twin Theatres, and the Capri Triple)which have been updated on the cinema treasures site. I may have to dig into the old newspaper ads within the Microfilm for this information(probably taking a trip over to UNC Libraries at the Wilson Library for this). But I will let you know.
In 1986,Cineplex Odeon had two movie houses within the greater Rocky Mount area. The Golden East Crossing Cinemas was one. The other was the Cardinal 1 & 2 at Crossroads Plaza(formerly K-Mart Plaza).
The Englewood Cinema 1 & 2 and the Oakwood Plaza 1 & 2 were operated under Stewart and Everett until 1986,before Carmike Cinemas took over operations.
The Oakwood Plaza Cinemas 1 & 2 is also NOT listed on the site but will be very soon.
Chuck1231:
The CENTER THEATRE opened on January 30,1939.
Continued to show first-run features and special interest films until it’s closing in 1981. At the time of it’s closing in 1981,the CENTER THEATRE was the only standing theatre in all of Downtown High Point after the Paramount and the Carolina closed.
The Capri Triple Theatre upon it’s opening was complete with a Dobly Stereo Sound System installed in it’s largest auditorium(Screen 1) for it’s November 21, 1979 premiere showing of “Fiddler on the Roof”,which was re-released back in theatres.
Screen 2: Was “The Prize Fighter” starring Don Knotts
Screen 3: Was the exclusive Triad engagement showing of Francis Ford Coppula’s “Apocalypse Now” starring Martin Sheen and Harrison Ford.
FYI: Westchester Mall opened in 1968 as High Point’s and the Triad’s first-in close shopping center anchored by three department stores
consisting of Thalhimers, J.C. Penney, and Eriad’s Department Store.
The cinema was on the opposite end of the shopping center when it opened in 1970 as the Trans-Lux Theatre that was owned and operated by Brandt Theatres as a 690 seat single screener. Received its new name The Westchester Mall Cinema in 1975 when it was still a single screen theatre. It remained that way until the 1990’s when it was twinned and change it’s format from showing first-run features to becoming a second-run discount movie house until it’s closing in 2000.

The Towne Theatre ran adult films? I did my extensive research on this theatre, and to my knowledge it must have been running soft-porn films as late show entries long before Martin Theatres took over in the mid-1970’s. I’m from Durham, and I know one theatre in my area, the Yorktowne showed in its entirely the explicit “XXX” rated version of “Caligula”.
Kings Plaza Shopping Center is now home to a very popular flea market that is open to the public on weekends. This is in the same location as where the former King’s Department Store, and the King Theatre used to be,not to mention the other section of the flea market was also to be a Winn-Dixie grocer.
