Watch out these extra $$$ XD big screens are all different sizes and shapes some curved some not so much curved. All have NO MASKING! When you watch a scope digital video you get to see white screen at the top and bottom, and they charge you extra for this great look!

I think old Cinemark must have taken over someone else at this spot, they don’t put in nice places like this in their theatres. I guess the PHARAOH’s sell popcorn and drinks here. Thanks Kevin for the photo, do you have any photos of the XD screen house. I think It’s all show in the lobby and probably not a Egyptian art deco look on the inside???

Thanks David for the photo. Must have been a great show on the huge Fox stage in 1964.

I guess If It rains by the beach the people get soaked but the screen stays dry.

terrywade commented about City council grants Century 21 dome theater historical status on Jun 13, 2014 at 4:18 am

Thank GOD the people at city hall saved this great Cinerama Century 21 Dome Theatre in San Jose CA from the wreckers ball!!! Build all the new condo/shop junk around It and keep the Dome as a center piece. Bring on the classic movies and bring back the large curved screen with curtains and other entertainment events for a new generation to enjoy. Show them what showmanship is. It’s not at the local multiplex.

Thanks R8 for the nice Dallas area theatres. I have been trying to tell the people running THS these days that Dallas TX and surrounding areas will make a great place to visit for a future theatre conclave tour. Nothing happens, maybe someone will see these great photos and a light will hit them and wake them up before these movie palaces are gone someday.

Thanks for the photo Granola. Must of been hot to see this film at the Chinese Hollywood, while not filmed in CinemaScope® this is one of the few films Disney made for the theatres in 4 CH stereo at that time. Must have sounded great on all the little surround speakers at the Chinese that they had since the Robe opened in 1953. Now the front is so boring with no NEON!

Just before the big neon CinemaScope® sign went up for the Robe. Thanks My Best for the classic image.

terrywade commented about 70mm Film Festival returns to Chicago on Jun 3, 2014 at 5:02 am

This Music Box Theatre is a true small box. To bad they can’t expand the screen for a nice huge wide 70mm showing with a small curve. 70mm must be super clear and sharp on such a small screen at Chicago’s Music Box. Do they have good stereo surround?

Was this shown in 70mm blow up on the curved Cinerama screen?

terrywade commented about Stadium Drive-In on May 22, 2014 at 1:15 am

Thanks Chris for the great photo. You can see the screen from the Oakland DI that was behind the Stadium DI. Both owned by different people. All torn out to build the Bay Fair Mall many years ago. This was a popular area in the 50’s & 60’s.

I love this old neon marquee that once was on the front. Seems like when a old classic movie palaces turn into a performing arts theatre and they get some funding want to tear everything off the front and make It look like It was when it opened, BORING! I’ll take the 50’s neon classic PLEASE. Just like the Chinese Hollywood the front now is dead, no lights, the dragons brought the place to life after dark on Hollywood Blvd.

To bad they showed this here at the RKO Pantages in Hollywood. They did not have a true curved Todd-AO screen(like the UA Egyptian) for this showing as advertised that It was shot in Todd-AO. They just ran a flat screen 70mm print of Miss Taylor’s big epic film at the Pantages Hollywood. I also saw this as a kid at the Randolph Theatre in PA, that was one of the best curved Todd-AO screens ever. I remember going up to the balcony as near the end of the run only a few reserved tickets were sold and the screen really showed off the curve. upstairs looking down to the stage. After Mike Todd died the Todd-AO people tried to get all the money out of the system and booked 70mm Todd-AO prints on any flat non curved screen they could rent out the showings for.

Thanks John for finding this great listing. 3-D was better then in the 50’s with 2 projectors going, much more things coming off the screen. The new digital 1 projector is a joke.

terrywade commented about Raise a New Screen at the United Palace on Apr 30, 2014 at 11:29 pm

Hope they can put in a larger wide semi curved screen. A new stereo surround sound system will rock the place and they can hide the surround speakers in the side walls. Color LED lights are a must during the movie in dark Blue/Purple or Green. Put them also up in the organ temples on each side of the screen. Red/Orange/Yellow during a intermission. Thanks Ross for posting this great video.

terrywade commented about Ken Cinema to close? on Apr 23, 2014 at 4:03 pm

The new remodel at San Francisco’s Landmark Embarcadero is a mess. Some screens are so small I’d rather stay home. No box office girl you buy your reserved seats from a machine. A way for Landmark to save money on the ticket help. Watch they will try to put this system into all their art houses. I have seen seniors leave after they had trouble using the seat machine. If your in SF try Landmarks Opera Plaza on Van Ness so tiny I bought a seat many years ago and walked out. We hope new theatre people will come into the San Diego Ken Theatre.

Time for new theatre people to take over the lease. SD is short on art type places. Good place for Cinema Draft House to take over a do what Landmark does not provide these days.

Thanks Ross for posting this great little sneak preview. The trailers of the 40’s 50’s & 60’s had some style. The junky loud ones today have the whole movie with 2 second edits and no fancy lettering like the past.

Thanks David for the nice photo. Is the Glendale building still around? You won’t see the lame theatre front marquee’s today with any of this type of advertising with cut outs.
