rvb: Cute story and thanks for sharing as I’m quite sure many of us have met and know many former Rockettes. They are a special group of women who bring such joy to RCMH holiday audiences each year! I’ve seen the show in Charlotte and in Buffalo, but never in NYC so maybe someday.
Many former RCMH Rockettes were interviewed and one was almost brought to tears when she recalled the possibility of this great theatre closing. In fact, a former Rockette lives in my hometown in western NYS….Emma Bishop. Since gracing the RCMH stage she has returned home to teach dance.
I just watched a DVD about the history of RCMH. It’s a must-see and can ordered through Time/Life. It was a bonus DVD that came with the Christmas Spectacular DVD celebrating its 75th year and featured Ross Melnick, Theatre Historian and co-creator of Cinema Treasures! Thanks Ross!
saving winter garden: By the looks of it, you have been doing your homework on the Winter Garden. Hope it all helps to save the Winter Garden and I think a visit with city officials is in order!
ChasSmith: THANK YOU for these incredible photos especially the ones taken from an orchestra pit perspective! There is no doubt that I will have to see this theatre next summer as it is a Warner! This one I see was designed by Thomas Lamb while the Warner near me in Erie PA was designed by Rapp & Rapp.
Could an historical grant from the State of NY be given to help restore this theatre? I believe, the old train station was given a restored bright future thanks to the State of NY.
I was just looking at the photos posted on this link and see where the poster windows were located and the exterior material which is still there covering up the front facade. I think that covering would have to GO. Anxious to learn of your idea to reopen and restore!
That would be a nice idea though I wouldn’t go so far as to tell the Baptist Church to “get lost”. Yet having said that I, along with many others, probably don’t appreciate the fact that the church demolished that theatre which was then lost forever. I grew up in nearby Westfield and have memories of the former Grand Theatre which is also lost forever!
rvb: More great RCMH memories! They are very special memories and thanks again for sharing!

And do you have a group that has been formed to work with you?
saving winter garden: Very nice website!
Good luck and keep us posted on all developments and details.

jaybird21: Thanks for the closing information and I’m still trying to learn if DeAngelis is still living.

saving winter garden: I just sent you an email and hope that with any luck this theatre can be saved after standing vacant for too many years!
tisloews: I agree!
tisloews: Thanks for the info.
Is the building still standing?
I couldn’t find in the above article where it mentioned the Roxy though will keep looking.
Guess it was demolished according to the post by “ken mc”.
Chuck: Thanks for the photo posted in April. Is the building still standing?
The “frontipiece” seems to take forever to load…is that usually the case?
Any photos??
eileenp: I’m not aware of the Blatt Bros being associated with the May Theatre that was in Mayville, but will try to locate that information.
Any photos??
