Agreed. Hopefully the new owners are more aggressive in their bookings than Mann was (who I think just didn’t care any longer).

But separate from the bookings, the thing they have the most control over (and the thing Mann REALLY let lapse) is creating a better experience overall. Arclight’s motto is “Where Movie Lovers Belong.” The last few years, The Chinese’s seemed to be “You’re Probably Not Doing Anything Else, Right.” They need more of the former and less of the latter. Movie lovers are loyal. Tourists… not so much.

The seats are numbered, so that wouldn’t be very difficult to do. But the Chinese so rarely sells out any more that it’s probably more of an annoyance than anything else (provided they don’t step up their bookings).

That’s nice to hear Segask. They didn’t do that for the Thursday midnight show. Although they also didn’t have a pre-show video presentation. Hopefully the new owners are taking a cue from the Arclight playbook and are going to attempt to class the place up (which seems odd to say considering it’s the world-famous Chinese). The sad truth is, in addition to the horrible bookings from the last few years, The Chinese has been attracting (intentional or not) a “lower class” of movie-goer. Too many talkers, teens, cell phoners… you know, tourists. I can go to a Saturday night 8:00 show in the Dome and almost always have a great experience. Saturday at The Chinese is an almost guaranteed recipe for a disruptive disaster. I would absolutely rather see Harry Potter DH2 at The Chinese over The Dome if I knew the audience could keep it together. I think there are others out there who have all but abandoned The Chinese because the environment there has become so low-class in the last few years.

Now if they could also add on-line reserved seating- that would be a whole new world of awesome.

went to the 7:10 showing of XMen First Class. Theatre was about two-thirds full maybe.

They closed the curtains in between the video preshow and the trailers.

When the curtain was closed an usher greeted the audience, asked everyone to turn cell phones off, etc.

Trailers they played were: Mr. Poppers Penguins Zookeeper Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 Green Lantern Rise of the Planet of the Apes

In the footprint forecourt outside the ‘Next Attraction’ posters were Zookeeper and Monte Carlo.

This weekend they are giving free 46 oz. popcorn.

AMC box offices basically have a binder full of pictures of acceptable passes, and often employees either don’t know it exists or can’t use their judgment to match the passes.

Jmarrellano I was just going on my experience with AMC and them not taking passes from the prior owners when i had gone their. the AMC city walk refused to accept my Lowes passes that i bought at that location. Or my Mann passes at the criterion. sounds like they didnt train all of their box attendents that they can accept them.

Actually AMC still accepts both Loews and (if you still have them) GCC passes

Reading Cinemas allowed patrons to use Pacific passes for the locations they took over for nearly a YEAR.

A decent sized, happy crowd for the midnight X-Men show. Was good to see a line on Hollywood Blvd for the first time in I don’t remember how long.

dtrigubetz In all fairness to them, I dont know of any chain that takes over a theatre location that allows you to still use the prior theatres passes or certificates. Regency certainly didnt let you continue to use Mann Theatre certificates after they took over the village and Bruin. Amc didnt allow customers to use Mann certificates at the Criterion, or Lowes tickets at City walk.

The LAHTF has been given assurance that there will be no “Gulla Gate” walling off the Chinese forecourt and that that picture (uploaded now onto this website, see Photos tab above) is going to be removed from the Gulla Jonsdottir site.

The new management knows nothing about establishing goodwill: The box offices(Hollywood Blvd & upstairs)have a notice saying Mann passes or vouchers will NOT be honored.

So if Mann certificate holders travels to Hollywood expecting to use same they are out of luck! How outrageous when thousands of seats go unsold at EACH screening(the 7 theaters seat about 3000).

Memo to new idiot management: You just lost concession sales and future patron loyalty.

FYI, cuture mavens may want to check out “The Importance of Being Earnest” and Sondheim’s “Company” coming to the Chinese 6 in June. Tickets are a steep $20, no senior or children discounts.

I changed my profile from BRADE41 to BRADE48.

On Movie Tickets.com it is listed as The Chinese Theatre. Wouldn’t it be better to still call it Grauman’s Chinese? What else other than X-MEN is booked for this Summer? I’d like to go but not really into comic book movies. I feel I should go as much as possible before they change it to EVENT Center.

not sure what to think of this but clicking through the website there was a link to a designers website two things that stood out were the chinese 6 being listed at the kodak 6 with a completely redesigned lobby,I do think the lobby design looks rather sleek and cool. But the other thing i noticed was this concept art of the Graumans chinese theatre with what appears to be a gate infront of it. Can they do this? wouldnt this be classified as altering the exterior of the building? isnt this theatre a cultural and historic city landmark and as such changes to the exterior are prohibited? further more if they do that what are the odds they might start preventing access to the forcourt after hours or worse yet charge admission to walk around the courtyard? http://www.gplusdesign.com/graumans-chinese-theater-2/

there should have been a why where i said “did paramount and wb never book their own Alist movies in the chinese”

I miss the ability to preview your comment before posting from the old site, any way that can be added back.

Chris your right, the studios really should consider booking films at both the chinese and the arclight, there is precidence for dual bookings at locations look at the Mann glendale theatres and the Pacific Americana theatres they are right across the street from each other and both get the same features, and the Vista and The Arclight book the same main feature alot of times. Its not like the arclight and the chinese are across the street or even on the same block, they are a good mile to mile and a half apart. I wonder if it boils down to politics as to the reason why they mainly book at arclight. The thing i never understood was why if Mann was owned by Paramount and WB did Paramount and WB hardly ever book there A list film in the crown jewel of Hollywood Cinemas. still scratching my head on this one. Hopefully if the studios still refuse to book A list titles at the chinese the new owners will think to sue (like the vista did) to get the studios to start booking the big Alist films. I went to see African Cats at the Chinese 6 on Saturday night, I was happy to see that they kept on members of the management, and some of the world class staff members from when it was Mann operated.

Just answered my own question…

Either the good folks at Chinese Theatres copied their corporate info word for word from Mann’s website and forgot to change it. OR…maybe they have bought Mann out all together and will slowly but surely take over the remaining theatres.

Heh…wishful thinking. I’m guessing it’s option “A”.

Needless to say, CT Gatekeepers, this theatre’s description – along with removal of Mann’s link and putting Chinese Theatres link in its place – needs to be updated.

And somebody tell me what other friggin theatres does Chinese own? They have it splashed in their About page that they own 54 screens or somthing like that. That’s news to me!

out of curiousity, where is ‘Tree of Life’ playing in LA?

In case no one has noticed, the LA Times is listing it as “The Chinese Theatre & Chinese 6 Theatres” with only nighttime shows for both venues shown. Truly sad, indeed.

“The Tree of Life” opens today at only two theaters in NY and two in LA. I assume the Chinese isn’t one of them, but wouldn’t it be nice if it was.

Somehow they’re managing to book X-MEN: FIRST CLASS. Maybe the new team has savvier bookers. IMO, they should offer Grauman’s and 3 more screens at Chinese 6 as bait for any major blockbusters they feel like booking. Day and date with ArcLight ala “Terminator Salvation” ain’t a bad idea, either.
