Thanks for sharing this Cinerama photo from NYC. Must have been quite a night to see this huge curved screen open up with the multi ch stereo sound to go with It. You can now see the films in your home on a Smile Box curved Blue Ray format. I’ll still take one of the many old Cinerama Theatres in the world to watch these great 3 projector films that came out in the 50’s and early 60’s. Watching the opening of the giant pink curtains were the price of admission! Thanks again Dallas.
Thanks Gran for this fine photo. Must have looked great in color, maybe dark blue curtain stage lights and the plants on the side with green lights. Most of the cinemas today even If they have curtains left don’t even light them from the bottom. No showmanship left in the USA.
Looks like a fun week. I may try to attend. We hope they play the theatre pipe organ in some of these places. The best old theatre on this years tour will be the the former Warner Cinerama Pacific on Hollywood Blvd that just sits there closed all these years.
Let’s hope they put in stereo speakers in each car with surround sound in the back seat with a volume control in each car. They will have to clean each classic vehicle every night as people will make a mess with all the refreshment snacks they will spill on the seats and floor. The big screen sounds great and I hope they just don’t put in a big square thing with no scope masking. Put some fans on the trees and make them move.

I can’t believe this once great theatre is just left to rot year after year. I toured this once proud cinema many years ago with the THS group under our past president host Miss Karen Noonan. She cares about the place. It was in way better shape then. You would think some company in town would take It over, do the long needed remodel work and name It after the people that helped pay for the remodel. The project just keeps going in circles. There will be a time soon when It will go past the limit for any salvage work to be done to fix this once proud cinema to be brought back to life for a new generation to enjoy in downtown Auburn NY.

Thanks Rives for this ad. To bad the Camelot did not keep the D-150 curvescreen. They did replace It with a screen that has a slight curve at least. A great cinema to see a movie in the main theatre. The others in the building are very small.
Thanks CC for the flyer ad. This is one of my favorite demo 3-D Blue Ray movies I own. Saw this when It ran at the Ivar Theatre in Hollywood many years ago. The best 3-D ever is when a fire truck ladder comes out of the TV screen and goes 7 feet into my living room. They don’t make 3-D movies today with that type of effect.
This old cinema is way to small even for a neighborhood theatre. Many people have a larger screen in their home. The owner does not advertise his other two cinemas in SF like the Presidio or the Marina Theatre’s in the newspaper on what is playing and the times. Any one who buys the place is not going to run It as a shoe box cinema they want the land only. If MR Lee the owner want business to boom put a small word ad in the Wed,Friday & Sat SF Chronicle as so many people have no idea these cinemas are still even open. Don’t run the same big opening films the larger multiplex places are showing show some new movies that the other big chains in SF are not booking. Who want’s to see a blockbuster on a tiny screen at the 4**** with no place to park.
Thanks DS for this great photo. This was my neighborhood theatre. It is still around but used as a church and at least they kept the nice marquee up. This was the place to go on Saturday for the kiddie shows. The manager kept the girls separated from the boys. We brought in hidden Caspers hot dogs from next door. Golden State Theatres/United CA Theatres kept on using old stale dogs from the day before and just re heated them for the kids thinking they did not care. May be time for the church folk to move on and turn the Fairfax back into a movie theatre for Oakland CA. A huge theatre for It’s area.
Thanks Neeb for the flyer. Must have been a busy time in the booth with 3 35mm films going each day. Theatre is still there but has ACT plays now and has been fixed up. It’s to bad that they tore down the Embassy Theatre next door. No more movies playing now on Market St except the Century 9 multiplex, when at one time many cinemas were all up and down downtown SF on Market St like the Fox, St Frances, Esquire, Pix, Hub,Guild,State and many more.
This is to bad. Now the theatre will just sit and rot for many more years. With all the money in this area from very well to do people someone or a local company needs to come on board and get the place open again.
To bad this former 70mm Todd-AO theatre is going to water. They will gut most of the inside like they did the former UA Metro and just keep a few walls up. This former roadshow cinema has had so many plans this new one may never get the water to fill the pool. It will be nice If at least they can get the old neon marquee going again and light it up with ‘Land Of The Pharaoh’s Swim Center’
Good news the new manager ‘Kyle’ will again start putting up on the giant neon marquee what is playing in side the Regal 9. The retro nice plastic letters have been missing the last month. A new letter changing pole is on It’s way to the cinema. No more lift each week to change all the letters on the marquee. This will take a little longer but may be safer to use. The movie times for this cinema will soon also be in the Good Times free magazine each week again. Now when you go by the giant lighted sign you can see what is playing and buy a ticket.

This Todd-AO 70mm print played roadshow here on a flat 70mm screen. To bad they did not play It at the Egyptian Theatre on a curved Todd-AO screen.
