It is confirmed that HARRY POTTER & DEATHLY HOLLOWS PT2 is showing at the Chinese and NOT Arclight. This is straight from Horse’s Mouth; or Arclight contact on Facebook. X-MEN and HARRY POTTER…not bad. Chinese has been missing tentpole films lately. Sadly, these are probably Mann bookings from before the sale.

I’m just glad is not turning into a disco. Thanks for the info William.

The Kodak Theatre is a much bigger venue than what the Chinese or Wiltern. Some acts need a bigger venue and some play better in a medium size venue. Remember the former Pacific’s Beverly Hills Theatre, was a very nice medium size venue. Before it was razed for a parking lot.

Well, I guess it is better than having it turn into a disco. Seems like of silly having it live events with the Kodak on the same property.

The first thing is they have to restore the full stage area. There is no stage behind the current screen at the Chinese. The Chinese Theatre would become a medium size venue in Los Angeles for concerts and television specials. They tape alot of specials at the Orphuem Theatre and the Wiltern is a concert gem in the city. If Pacific Theatres had not triplexed the Hollywood Pacific back in 1978 and left it a single screen. it would be doing concerts or Broadway shows. Remember Pacific Theatres and Nederlander teaming up on the Pantages Theatre in the late 70’s for Broadway touring shows. Also remember when the Wiltern Theatre was slated tobe razed tobe saved as a concert venue. The live events with films are the only way the Chinese Theatre could survive.

So they are going to show films intertwined with live events? For example: Now they are showing X MEN, and next week for 2 night a band or performer is booked. Are they going to raise the screen and re-format everything for the act, then next day resume the film?

For the most part the are looking towards a multi-use performing type theatre than a film only theatre. Where both film and concerts will rule the room. The Wiltern and Orpheum Theatre both offer concerts and are use for special film programs. Both houses make money and are still open. The only thing that will be lost in the new conversion in the main house. Would be the large screen that it has now. And return the screen back to a flying screen and a new stage. There is no stage in the main house right now.

I still believe the Chinese and Arclight can co-exist. Mann just really gave up over the past few years. They were slow closing shop and just let the theatre coast. At one time (not long ago)they were agressive in bookings; Summer of 2005 Batman Begins, War of the Worlds, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory all opened first run there. X-Men appears to be doing quite well. Let’s hope the new owners see that and will start to care about film exhibition at the Chinese once again.

The Chinese is for tourists and premieres because that’s what Mann set their sights on. I know I would go there whenever I could but the class of moviegoer Mann targeted over the past 4 or 5 years has been less than desirable. That’s why you go to Arclight. Movie lovers willing to pay a slightly higher price to see movies well shown. I heard from someone that the Hero Complex Superman screening they had at the 6 on Saturday was botched with that 3D lens dimming the 2D presentation (and that was with Richard Donner in house). He commented when he came out to do q&a how horribly dark the movie was. (Apparently this was very embarrassing and they took the filter off for Superman II, but I can’t see that happening at Arclight.)

The Chinese had become the world’s greatest dollar theater (both in the quality of films shown and with the quality of the people paying to see said films). I’m hoping the new management has higher standards and a bit more self-esteem.

The Chinese is beautiful but it’s for tourists and premieres. I live a few blocks away and never go there. I always go to Arclight. I did see District 9 here and the sound and projection were excellent. The programming is lame for both the main auditorium and the 6 plex next door.

I hope they can co-exist. I kind of wish Regency had taken over the Chinese…

Good News. Hopefully I will be noticed that Chinese and Arclight can co-exist and both have success. The truth of the matter seems like Mann (Cineamerica) really did not give a damn.

I am proud to have contributed my $12.75 to that total!

Speaking of which, it costs less to see a movie here (Grauman’s) than it does to see a movie at The Dome. Somehow, the good folks at Chinese Theatres can find a way to utilize that fact in their marketing scheme so audiences can come back!

Just the Grauman;s…..

Is that for Grauman’s alone, or Grauman’s + the 6?

I’m happy to hear the positive comments. I hope to make it this weekend to see X MEN. I’ve actually been trying to get to the 6 Plex to see TRUE LEGEND. I don’t think the trailers being shown mean they are booking the films. Studios attach trailers to high profile films to be seen. My weekend visit to Arclight I noticed both GREEN LANTERN and HP7 are booked to show there.

I saw X-MEN FIRST CLASS on Saturday 6/4 – 7:10 PM show. There was an introduction to the film at my screening as well as the free popcorn. Nice sized crowd – the 2 center aisle seats were packed to the gills. I guesstimate they sold about 500 seats or so (maybe more). Presentation still top notch – sound was nice and crackling with the THX/Dolby combo sounding as brisk as ever & a clear & nicely lit DP image on screen. With them showing trailers for “Green Lantern” & “Harry Potter 7.2”, hopefully that means that they will go day and date with ArcLight. I’ve already made up my mind to see “Harry Potter 7.2” here if they do indeed get it!

Then it’s already being run better than it was by Mann.

cliffs ah that explains it then yeah he was on a mic and introduced the film. the employee even spoke to a person texting on his phone in the row infront of me a few mins into the feature, I am assuming to tell them to put it away, cause the texter did just that.

Oh really? I walked out for (literally) 60 seconds right at midnight so I obviously missed it.

cliffs they did infact have a person speak to the audience infront of the curtain with a microphone before the midnight show on thursday night right before the opening curtain call.

Agreed. Hopefully the new owners are more aggressive in their bookings than Mann was (who I think just didn’t care any longer).

But separate from the bookings, the thing they have the most control over (and the thing Mann REALLY let lapse) is creating a better experience overall. Arclight’s motto is “Where Movie Lovers Belong.” The last few years, The Chinese’s seemed to be “You’re Probably Not Doing Anything Else, Right.” They need more of the former and less of the latter. Movie lovers are loyal. Tourists… not so much.
