“Dracula” and “Dracula’s Daughter” will be the double feature at the Loews on Oct.27, part of their Holloween festival. Can’t wait to see those two films on the “big” screen.
Parts 2 & 3 were filmed at the same time. Now I’m not sure if the “To be continued” I saw was from part 1 or 2. I doubt if any sequals were planned when part 1 came out. The film was a much bigger hit then anyone expected and even then it was 4 years until part 2 was released.
Saw “Back To The Future” Sunday night. Pretty big crowd and it was a nice print but I have one question. I could swear when I saw this film in 1985 right after the last scene and before the closing credits “To be continued” was posted on the screen. This was not on the print at the Ziegfeld. Also it seemed like the last scene was cut slightly. Does anyone else remember how this film originally ended. Other then that it was great to see this film on the “Big” screen.
I last attended the Deluxe in June 1974 although I do not remember the film (It was a comedy). It was a Friday night and the theatre was about ¾ full. I would guess that was the “widescreen” version of GWTW that was the Deluxe’s final film. The theatre was clean and well kept as long as it played legitamte films. It was in better shape than the Benson was. To bad those plans you mentioned never happened. It might have been a great venue for “classic films” had it been tried.
Hy Tulip closed over fifteen years ago. The food was great. The other kosher deli in the neighborhood was the Empress at 86th st. & Bay Parkway. The food there was as good as Hy Tulip’s. The Empress closed about 2 years ago and now the closest Kosher Deli is on 13th ave. About 7 subway stops away!
Assuming it will not be the 3D version I wonder why the Ziegfeld picked Dial M. There are much better Hitchcock films (Strangers On A Train, Vertigo) that could have been screened instead.
The print at the Jersey was fair. It was not sharp and the sound was muffled. I saw GWTW at the Loews 34th st several years ago and it was the same print. Ironically I was at the 50th anniversary screening of GWTW at Radio City in 1989 and the print screened then was superior to what I have seen recently.
Since the Loews does not program every day there really should not be screenings on Rosh Hasanah, Yom Kippur, Christmas Eve & Day,Good Friday and Easter Sunday. These are the most holy days to Jews & Christians and I really do not see why the Loews has to program films on any of those days.
If anything showing these films on Rosh Hashanah will mean there will probably be less people in attendance then if the films had been presented one week earlier or later. The Loews does not program things every weekened so I do not see why these films could have not been presented on a different weekend.
I believe ABC was using this theatre for TV before 1955. The game show “The Name’s The Same” originated from this theatre from 1952-55. The front of this theatre can be seen in at least 2 episodes of the classic TV series “The Odd Couple”. I also saw a broadcast of “Dick Cavett” at this theatre. I sat up in the balcony.
I am looking forward to this series but will prbably skip “Gone With The Wind” I have seen this film on a big screen several times over the last 4 years including at the Jersey and it seems like the only print available has poor sound and picture. I wish the Ziegfeld would have screened “The Adventures Of Robin Hood” or “The Wizard Of Oz” instead because the current prints availabe for those films are spectacular.
Yes, That photo was from an ERA fan trip. Since the tracks under the “El” are not electrified the subway cars were coupled to a diesel locomotive that towed the cars along McDonald Ave and via the now abandoned South Brooklyn Railroad as far as 2nd Ave and 39st in Sunset Park. Those are the “Museum” D type cars that were used in the Malcolm X film. Those 3 units (Each having 3 cars) are the only cars that exist from this type. All the others were scrapped in 1967.
Great photos but all of them were AB’s. I rode both the ABs and D types back in the 1960s and they were amoung the best subway cars made. The Ds were actually 3 car units linked together. You could walk through the 3 cars without going outside. The Ds had great acceleration. 3 D units are still owned by the MTA but sadly out of over 900 AB’s made only one non-powered car (in the TA museum) still exists in NY. 2 working models are owned by a trolley museum in Conn.
The main entranceto the theatre was on the corner of Broadway and 181st street. The balcony had a seperate entrance which is still used today. Retail stores replaced the orchestra section. Since the balcony had a seperate entrance it was easy to retain the balcony as a seperate theatre.
If the building still stands the decorative circles are probably still there even if the marquee is gone. I would check some buildings on Flatbush Ave. Maybe near the Loews Kings.
There was no scaffolding last July 4th and the exterior looked OK the last time I passed by. Only the girders from the Marquee remain so that would not be a reason. 2 weeks ago a tour of Coney Island theatre sites was run and I wonder if anyone on that tour would have any information about the Shore.

How was the print of GWTW? Was it the same one that was used at the Loews Jersey?

The subway cars seen in the Malcolm X movie were known as BMT “D” Type cars. They ran in the BMT subway from 1927 until 1965.
I would guess that those are wires. They are to close together to be trolley tracks. I count 4 wires.

The orschestra section was closed sometime in the late 1970’s. By 1986 the balcony had been twinned and would become a quad in 1991.
The balcony was split into 2 theaters. The orchestra was untouched.
