well im the one who post the story about breaking into the picfair on my birthday.to my knowledge when it was an appliance store they didnt level the floor, they did have a leveling system made of wood,i remember we bought a used wedgewood stove there and how hard it was to get it rolled up to the front.and as for the riots,i lived on the 1400 block of spaulding, and there was this big old house on the corner towards pico near the alley, and the owner set it on fire(insurance)the whole street came out to help him put it out,im sure the picfair did the same with all of the stuff that was in it.
i went to carthey elementary in the early 90s.and in the main office they had a picture of a group of kids satnding in the lobby of the theatre in the 1950s.thats one of the things in la that shouldnt of been torn down, much like the pacific electric red line that ran in front of the palace.also this is the first time that ive see up close pictures of the tower.on the corner of cresent hieghts and olympic there is a church that has a very similar tower, who ever designed the carthey neigbrohood was smart.
the old el capitan is known as the palace if that helps.i worked for pacific theatres “the grove” from 01 to 03,and they own the el capitan consession stand which i think is odd.after every two hours the whole staff gathers around and they read the “numbers” and they always take the count for the el capitans numbers.this may have been changed since the arclight is closer and is also owned by pacific.
my best friend worked at the theater next to graumans before they tore it down.when they let him go he took the exit signs that were over the doors,he has 2 i have one,its in a asian script,so im happy with my little piece of hollywood.the last movie i saw there was rush hour 2,and the place was empty,it connected to gruamans by some kind of tunnle,i wonder if they incorprated that into the new complex.either way my friend shane got transfered to the dome, and i saw solomon birch there and that was awsome.im a little upset about the whole archlight thing, but at least they kept it.
ive been inside the tomkat and it isnt that great.they seem to be trying to restore the upper portion where the projection room use to be and where the bathrooms are.the staircase shows what they place use to look like.like other posters said, its dirty/sleazy.its all black inside with red seats, and the stage is in a t shape.when i went the lights were on,and in back of the theatre they made some kind of booth for the video projector.the lobby looks like Bobby Trendy from the anna nicole show furnished it.
this was also one of the theatres to be bought by stax before the capitol, the lamar was put up for lease at the time and jim stewart decided on the capitol instead.
they tore down the lobby area of the theatre, only the bowl shape part remains,im not sure what they are gonna do with the site, but that area is slowly getting better.when i was younger that was a “bad” theatre to go to,but i did go see a few movies there before it closed.
