Glad to see the Jersey is kicking off the opening season with 3 excellent Hitchcock films. Even though “Rear Window” will be shown on Friday, 9-22, Im kind of dissapointed that "Rope" will be shown at 4.30 on Saturday 9-23 with "Vertigo" starting at 8.pm. Too bad "Rope" could not start later, like, say 7.pm with "Vertigo" starting at 8.30 pm, but, hey, it will still be a great show. Anyway, after a less than stellar summer at theplexes, it is good to see the Jersey opened again.
Posted by Theaterat for Phil Phil…. The Metro was probably known as the Parkway, but I never heard it being refered to that. This was just a small nabe that got last run fare. There were also other theaters at that time that showeed last run fare, but many of them were larger and cleaner than the Metro, so they continued to "soldier on" somewhat longer. This theater generally got a decent crowd for weekend shows in those pre VCR, DVD, Pay Per View and Cable days, but the overall lack of cleanliness and the general run doen quakities of this theater kept many away. I rememb4er it closed very early in 1955. Like the lowly Colony theater at 65th.St and 18th. Av, practically across the street from the beautiful Walker, this theater was called "the Dumps" by local residents.I DO remember this theater having childrens matinees on Saturday, but I only went there a few times because our neighborhood theater was the Endicott at 13th. Av and 71th. St.Even though the Metro was run by the Endicott theater group, it was neglected in favor of the larger and nicer Endicott theater, wich was the “flagship” of the Endicott chain. I forgot about the supermarket`s roof cave in until I read the latest posting. Wonder if anybody has photos of it as a theater. Amazing how nobody ever thought of taking photos of these theaters way back when. Posted by Theaterat for PhilPhil
Was on Flatbush Av last night- 6-15. Stoped to look at the Kings. Even though the gates were closed, I noticed lights on inside the building. Wonder whats going on.
Lifes too short... The Jersey charges 6.00 for adults and 4.00 for seniors and children. To see a double feature costs 10.00 for adults and 7,00 for seniors and children. A decent deal, especially when compared toplex prices, Go!
Got to see the inside of the ST George about 3 years ago when they were getting ready for a recital- or something. A very impressive theater. I did not notice any theater type seats there.Have they been installed yet? and also, are there any plans to screen big screen epics or other fare here? Just curious.
Life`s Too Short… A good “guestimate” would be about 550 people.Out of the 4 blocks of seats in the orchestra, the center 2 contained the most people. There were many people sitting in the first few rows, but I generally sit about 2 thirds the way behind the screen in the left side of the 2 central seating areas.Good show with a good crowd.
Saw “Jaws” Sat 6-3 at the Jersey.Absolutely great to see it on the big screen again.Even though it was a damp rainy evening for some reason the non-working air conditioning did not seem to matter because the theater was comparitively cool. This was one of the best attended shows that bI have ever seen over here. There were plenty of young children and they were well behaved. And it was a pleasure NOT to hear those obnoxious cell phones ringing. Seems the patrons here are respectful of the rights of others and that is just fine with me. Now if the patrons of the multiplexes behaved the same way, prehaps I would start to go again- providing there is something worth seeing!
Went to this theater several times. The most memorable time is when I went with my then current girlfriend to see “Apocolypse Now” early in 1980. The heat was not working that cold day, but the film was excellent! That was about the 5 th time I saw it. We used her long down jacket as a blanket and it kept us warm, but my feet were numb!
Jim Rankin… interesting post. Once they get the air to work at the Jersey,it probably will-or should be opened year round. The “fan and ice” system of cooling did require tons of ice and the melting ice probably created plenty of water. This system of air conditioning was used by some railroads to cool passenger cars in the warm months until “real” air conditioning came along with the advent of the streamline era of the mid 30s.Of course they also had fans, but I would not want to travel too far on a railroad coach so equiped on a hot humid day!
Though the air does not work at the Jersey, the “return' does work}see the posts of last summer} so at least there will be some cooling. This is a fan system that circulates air in the theater. Was there last June for "Tron” and “Star Trek II- the Wrath of Khan” and the theater was comparitively comfortable on that hot night in early June. What did moviegoers do in the 20s and early 30s in those pre air conditioning days? They went to a movie and enjoyed it! Anyway, I`m looking fowards to seeing “Jaws” on the big screen. Hard to believe this film opened 31 years ago! I remember seeing it at the Marboro theater in Brooklyn, NY like it was last week.
Davebazooka…. Thanks for the series of photos you took of the Jersey recently. I too have trouble taking photos in the auditorium and other places in this theater. You sure will NOT find this amazing detail and work at a multiplex. This- along with a usual top notch program schedule is what keeps me coming back. Probadly will do “Jaws” next Saturday. Too bad “American Graffitti” is not being shown on the same day.Glad you enjoyed the theater.
Well, I guess you cant please everybody all the time.Even though I am a fan of "On the Beach" the choice of "Brazil" for the Saturday show kept me scratching my head. For the most part the Jerseys programming is quite good, so Ill leave it at that.

Anyboby out there see or have any comments on the John Ford films that played at the Jersey in late April? Could not make it, but Im curious if the show was well attended and the quality of the presentation.Probably will go to see " On The Beach" when it screens.Definately one of Stanley Kramers and Gregory Pecks best, not to mention Ava Gardner. Her screen presence was hard to beat, especially in this film. Also, a fine pre Norman Bates performance from Anthony Perkins.
Re the Alpine… It seems that this theater will NOT be closing after all.A theater developer from Queensbought the property for an undisclosed ammount. He plans to refurbish it and have community theater and other events in one of the auditoriums.Bay Ridge congressman Marty Golden is part of the plan and Massey- Knakal real estate has confirmed the deal according to a NY Daily News article dated May 3. Keep you posted. While far from being a great theater, maybe now in the near future it may become a better theater. Prehaps I will go to it again and give it a better review, providing there is something worth seeing!
Kings…. Re the Loews. It seems a theater developer from Queens- who owns a few theaters in Queens and Manhattan has purchased the Alpine { wich was slated to close shortly} for an undesclosed ammount. Part of the plan is to refurbish it and present community theater and other events in one of that multiplexe`s auditoriums. What this has to do with the Kings I have no clue, but if someone can get him interested in it, maybe he will be interested. Also spoke to a friend in real estate. He claims that the neighborhood where the Kings is located is “dicey” at best and that the general location can possibly scare some investors off. Is there any info on having a new meeting? Please keep me posted.
Bob Furmanek,et all,Even though several proposals have been kicked around, the important thing is a group has already been formed. We all know that it will not be easy, but to let this theater die or quietly rot away just will not do. The Kings does have potential and we are just trying to figure out who we can shoot ideas to and to get some sort of response.God only knows what the inside looks like after years of being closed, but Ill wager that it probably can be rehabilitated.Prehaps your years at the Jersey can help us out somewhat. And Im pretty sure that Jersey City politics are not too different from NY{ or in this case Brooklyn } politics. Regardless of your party affiliation, the whole thing is about Money, power and Money. If Manhattan can have countless theaters and “ cultural centers” why not Brooklyn?
Finally, there seems to be something actually happening re. the Kings! Please let us{me} know a time and where to meet on Sat 4-8, and I definately will be there! Will be checking these posts all week to find out. Thanks!
Re the 3-26 screening of THE TEN COMMANDMENTS- another triumph for the Jersey!Went with my friend PHIL PHIL and our dates. After seeing it on the big screen- the way it was ment to be seen, I doubt that I can ever enjoy it as much when it is shown on TV again. There will be a TV movie version of this film next Monday 4-3 on channel 7{ I believe} Even though I intend to watch it, it probably can`t compare to the De Mille version. There were some minor projection and sound flaws at the screening, but nothing serious enough to diminish the experience. The parting of the Red Sea and the writting of the commandments themselves were still impressive even after 50 years. And the cast! I hate to use the cliche “ they sure don1t make them like they used to”, but after witnessing it at a grand theater like the Jersey, it sure is true.
Probably just an oversight on the part of the management. I`m sure they did not go out of their way to show these films on Rosh Hassanah.

And that name- Atlas Park! Sounds like a place where muscle men hang out.
The neighborhood where the Culver was located was loosely refered to “the Culver section”. pure coincidence if it was named after Culver City. CA.
