Have always been interestd in what films have played at this theatre. Recently came across some listings, “Rosemarys Baby”, in 1969 a re-issue of “Camelot"and as per the Village Voice, on Oct.1,1970 "Hello, Dolly!”.
Am very happy for the restoration and re-opening of this theatre. Please, the marquee needs to be replaced, it is awful to look at.
Saw “Victor/Victoria” here in the early 80s-way after its initial release and engagements. I believe that by this time The Baldwin had become a dollar theatre
When I was in High School back in the early 70s I used to sub usher here sometimes. My main house was Centurys Grove in Freeport.
In the 70s, all the Century Theatres had just about the same look, and were kept very clean and in top shape
I believe this is the theatre where I saw the reserved seat, roadshow engagements of “Star!‘ and "Hello, Dolly!”. Both films played here for their initial LI release, while continuing their reserved seat, roadshow engagements in Manhattan
As per the Village Voice, April 3, 1969-“Sweet Charity” at the UA Rivoli, 3 shows everyday Easter Week! Showtimes: 10:00 AM, 2:30, and 8:30 PM. You could get tickets at the box office or by mail
never got to see this as a single screen. By the time I got to Kansas City it had been divided up. I do recall seeing “S.O.B.” “Rhinestone Cowboy”,“Blow-Out” and “Hardcore”. Visually the theatre was a stunning sight as you entered the Country Club Plaza area
A little European jewel-box now. I attended the legit re-opening in the 1990s. A production called Cirque Eloise- a variety /circus type show that had a lot of former Cirque de Soliel performers in the cast. Theatre books mostly Theatre for Young Audience attractions.
In the 1980s, I was curious to see what one of the 42nd St grindhouses looked like inside, so I came here. The New Amsterdam would have been a better choice, but oh well.
Dark, dirty, smelly, and in awful condition was what it was. Oh and many men roaming around in the shadows.
as far as I can tell ,the location for this theatre was on the east side of 8th Ave, almost at the corner of 43rd. The Westin Hotel is now at that location
“Robber Bridegroom” with Patti LuPone, and “So Long 174th St.” were some of the last legit shows.
I too saw a taping of “Dream House” on a class trip- if I recall at that time all orch seats were taken out to accomodate cameras, cables, electrics and the like
I believe this theatre had legit fare in the late 70s ,early 80s. “Musical Chairs”,“Marlowe” and a revival of the musical version of “Canterbury Tales”
This pic is actually a picture of the Times Square Theatre, -the actual building with the columns. The marquee for the Apollo is the only thing Apollo about it.
Other shows that played the Apollo after a return to legit, “5th of July” with Richard Thomas and “Bent” with Richard Gere and I believe Michael York
The stage shows and films! As a child my mother would take us when she could. “Airport”, “The Christmas Tree”, “Darling Lili” are just a few I can remember.
In the late 70s/early 80s film retrospectives were shown. I recall being one of the few people in the orchestra level for a 10AM screening of “Cabaret”.
A dance teacher of mine was in the corps de ballet in the 1940s,and her husband Nicholas Daks was ballet master/director. She told us stories of the 5-6 shows a day, the rooftop garden, tennis courts, and the dorms for the performers to rest while the movie was showing.
Years later I had friends who were Rockettes, and I myself auditioned many times for various shows in the rehearsl halls upstairs

In 2001 the Ziegfeld had a festival of sorts-old movie musicals. I was planning on going to see “Funny Girl” on the big screen again but I did not have the chance to get to the theatre that day, September 11.
Love the fact that this has been kept as a single screen. The memoribilia in the theatre is unique and interesting.
‘The Rose", “Victor/Victoria”, and “Dreamgirls” are some of the films I recall seeing here. And as I am a creature of habit, I always sit in the same seat in the very last row of the theatre
Harlequin rehearsal studios was directly next door to the Gaiety, and if you werent paying attention to which entrance you were using, you quickly found out by the pictures on the wall as you went up the stairs!
The Spotlight Live club is now closed. A few years back an underage party goer was found dead on the roof of the club. She had been murdered by a club employee. Other incidents of violence had occured at the club prior to that. Signage for the club is still up at the now empty site
was in here a few times when it was th Park-Miller, porn house. Returned many years later, when it was the Kit Kat Klub for the 1990s revival the legit tuner “Cabaret”
I see in the Village Voice, dated Oct, 1, 1970 “Hello, Dolly!” was playing at the Freeport. So at that point it was still getting good bookings

well those theatres are teeny. When it was a single screen I saw “Patton” and in 1969 an end of run engagement of “Star!”
Saw “Victor/Victoria” here in the early 80s-way after its initial release and engagements. I believe that by this time The Baldwin had become a dollar theatre

in 1979 I appeared in a live stage show here. It was sort of odd being on the stage after having seen movies here
I believe I saw “The Lion in Winter” here

anyone know where the roadshow engagement of “Star!” played in Kansas City?

A movie and then Zotis, the restaurant with the great Rueben sandwiches next door!
