I posted many comments on the Dupage theater page, and now after I fully found out what the Friends plans where I regret that I showed them so much support. I still believe that the theater should have been saved, but I didn’t realise that there plan called for complete demolition.
Brian is correct about the Marquee orginally having ribbons with two colors. If you look at View link you can see a picture that claims to be right after Dilliger was shot. Also Brian is right about the lettering on the old sign being different. In the photo it is a black background with white letters. This being said I do like the new marquee. It is a very good job, glad to see the used actual light bulbs! Only compaint is that I think they could have made the Victory Gardens a little bit bigger on the sign.
To add to the list of recently lost Sullivan buildings, the Harvey House in Chicago burned a week after the Wirt Dexter Building. It was the last of the frame houses built by Adler and Sullivan, and Frank Lloyd Wright most likely had his hand in its design.
The gymnastics school that is currently in the Fox is closing. It is being replaced by a Gold’s Gym. Gold’s says its stay is only temporary until it can build a new building. That means that the building will probably be empty again in the near future.
The theater had its grand reopening yesterday. Still showing new releases, although they did raise ticket prices to $4. Still almost half as much as all other theaters in the area.
I recently found pics of the new marquee. I was disapointed because I thought they where replacing the vertical marquee, but it was just the lower marquee. The new one appears to have a digital screen on the sidewalk side.
This theater was literally closed with no notice. Its closing was announced the day it closed. Most people didn’t know until that night, or the next day.
The Southern Illinoisan recently ran an article on the theater(which I could not find on there online version). It said that little interest has been shown in the theater and the city’s attempts to talk to Kerasotas have accomplished nothing. The city is still inforcing building codes and conducting inspections to make sure Kerasotas is performing maintaince of the structure. The article also mentioned that Kerasotas has been using the theater, as storage space.
To say the a homosexual lifestyle is destructive is stupid. It is definetly not the only lifestyle that is destructive. I am suprised to find out that Jn’s theater is showing “The Ringer”. If you want to see a destructive lifestyle, just look at Johnny Knoxville. How many teenagers have died trying to recreate his stunts? I don’t think that any theater should be forced to show a movie. I do have a problem though with people who say that they don’t like “Brokeback Mountain” because it might promote a “destructive lifestyle”. Do these people say we shouldn’t show Titanic because it shows pre-marital sex? Kate and Jack’s relationship also destroyed a marriage, remember?
I would just like to add a comment about Jn’s lonely brother. I know many elderly people with family that are very lonely because that family no longer cares. That really has nothing to do with being gay or not. Also so many of his freinds are from broken families and divorce because they where forced to stay in the closet and get married because that was what they where told was right.
Just thought I would add that we have lost another great Sullivan building. The Pligrim Baptist Church burned down on January 6th. It was originally a synagogue and was designed at the same time as the Garrick Theater. It is famous as the birthplace of modern gospel music.
“We will probably be judged not by the monuments we build but by those we have destroyed.” That is one of my favorite quotes, and it still holds true today. It is a shame that 40 years after the destruction of Penn Station, which started the preservation movement and lead to the creation of the National Register of Historic Places, that these things still take place
Paul, can you give me an example of a theater you had success with? I hope Life is correct in saying he has said all he needs too and will stay off this board.
I feel that anyone that is willing to take on a project such as this deserves my respect. Life, you have no idea what has gone on with this theater. The former operator promised that it would not close, then closed it with only a weeks notice. That is better than they did with the other old theater in town, they announced it was closing the same day it closed. Then the city talked about wanting to save it, but did nothing. They purchased an abandoned bar in the area from a convicted child molester at a price much higher than its real value. They bought it with the intention of demolishing the structure. Many people in town where furious that they purchased that structure, while ignoring the beatiful Varsity just down the street.
Why are you sorry? Because I hope someone steps in to save this theater? What is your deal with Paul anyway? Did he hurt you in any way? If not, please leave this message board alone, I would hate to lose it. Also, if Paul can manage to purchase or lease this theater from Kerasotas, I don’t really how much he screws it up. Just getting the theater would be a miracle.
Les, I am aware of the story about the creation of the “Crawford Special”. I posted this because organized had been arguing with people on other theater boards over the name. I have never seen the name “Fox Special” applied to these organs. I believe that your telling of how the organ got the name “Crawford Special” is the correct story. I think that the name later fooled people into thinking Crawford designed the organ.
Please do not prevent comments on this theater. I hope that Mr. Warshauer or someone does get involved. This theater despritely needs someone to step up and save it. I don’t care if Mr. Warshauer has had problems in the past, everyone makes mistakes. Hopefully he will step up and prove Life’s too short wrong!

Both Carbondale theaters have 8 screens. There is a movie theater located just behind the mall in Marion. It also 8 screens.
The Gem was the heavist building moved at the time. The Shubert later supased that record.
The theater was finally demolished this past week.

Yes they kept the University 8 open.

The paper recently said demolition work will start soon on this theater. I just wish that they will save the buildings marquee.

The local paper recently ran this article on the sale and eventual reopening of the theater.

Seems to me that Ken is mad he didn’t get to install the projection equipment here!
Did the Fox ever get its new marquee?
