kennyjames commented about Lake Shore Drive-In on Jun 27, 2018 at 10:01 am

The 1963 event may have been the burning down of the Lake Shore’s screen ! It was on fire Mother’s Day, 5/12/63. The drive-in was closed for about a month and a half and reopened with a new screen on 6/29/63. The Lake Shore’s very first night was 7/6/51 and the last night was 10/8/85. I am currently putting together a series of books on the Denver area’s drive-ins and indoor theatres. If anyone has a question, I’ll be happy to share my research with you. Thanks ! – Ken Mitchell

The telephone directories always listed the West drive-in’s address as 601 Kipling. I vote for 737, it makes more sense ! :) Strangely, a few years after the West closed, its screen was set on fire on 7/17/89 – the 41st anniversary of their opening night ! If anybody has questions about the Denver area’s drive-ins or indoor theatres, I am putting together a series of books on the subject. I’d be happy to share my research with you. kennyjames commented about East 70 Drive-In on Jun 15, 2018 at 9:50 am

Hi MontyM – I thought the new East 70 had a connection with I-70 too until I was doing research for a series of books I’m putting together on the history of the Denver area’s drive-ins and theatres. Turns out the “70” was added to the name on 5/11/65 after the installation of a new 70mm screen. I-70 was built a few years later. Another fun fact – the East was simply referred to as “Drive-In Theatre” when it first opened on 7/4/47. It was given the East name shortly after it opened its second season in April 1948. If anyone reading this has questions about drive-ins or theatres, please feel free to get in touch. I’d be happy to share my research with you. Thanks ! .
