I have great memories of the Fortway. I was an usher there from 1994 to 1997. I can still remember my Mom taking me to see Back to the Future there in 1985. It’s The Great Wall supermarket now. I can’t help shaking my head when I walk by the place now. I really miss the Fortway.
I worked for a few years at the Fortway. The Alpine was our sister theatre in the Cineplex Odeon chain. The fortway was no palace but I always thought the Alpine was a dump. Still is even with the added screen in the back of the building.
I remember going to see Castaway there. It was a very cold night in Bklyn. I’m talking way below freezing. The Marboro was not close to home and I didn’t have a car so it was a trek. The paper had the last showtime listed at 10:45. I arrived at the Marboro right about 10:45 to find out the paper was wrong. Last show was at 10:30 and the box office was closed. I pleaded with the manager but to no avail. My friend and I froze going home.
I remember when it was a porn theatre. That was long before internet porn and during what some people call the golden age of porn. Whatever that means. A few blocks down was Toys n Things. Great toy store. I got some great WWF figures there.
When I was a young kid my uncle lived at 1 Prospect Park Southwest. The Pavilion was right across the street. I remember the theatre being closed for awhile. There are times I still call it the Sanders because of my uncle and parents. I still go to the Pavilion because of it’s classic look and feel and the fact that Farrell’s is a block away doesn’t hurt.
When I was a young kid my uncle lived at 1 Prospect Park southwest. The theatre was just across the street. I remember it being closed for awhile. There are times that I still call it the Sanders because of my uncle and parents. The Pavilion isn’t the closest theatre to my house however I still go there because of it’s classic look and feel
This pic is great. Ive never seen a pic this old of the Fortway. You can see the old Bklyn Union Gas tanks behind the building, those things have been gone forever. I was an usher at the Fortway from 1994-97 but by then the marquis didn’t have this classic look.
When I was in High School in the mid 90’s there was an active wear clothing store that took up part of the building.

This place has charm. Glad it’s still open.
This theatre has no charm. It lacks class and I almost never go there.
