I hope it is only a temporary closing. I make an effort see a movie at the Crest or other single-screen houses whenever I visit Los Angeles. When I was there in August, it looked perfect in every way. I don’t see where it needs any renovations, unless it is for something that isn’t visible, such as the roof, or the plumbing.

Official: It’s “closing for renovations” and dropping its relationship with Carmike, and Bigfoot declines to state whether it’s up for sale. That all sounds to me like the Crest may soon show its last movie. The closure will take place after SingAFest, which begins next weekend after “The Lion King 3D” ends its engagement. Robert – I hope the screening of Fright Night was only sparsely attended because Hollywood hasn’t learned that they need to stop remaking films from the ‘80’s and come up with something new.

I read a Facebook rumor (and only that, mind you) that the Crest will close once again in October.

I was there last week, and it is still a beautiful theater. The red screen curtains still say Majestic Crest, and they still use a Carmike policy trailer. I saw “Fright Night” on its opening day, and there were only 5 patrons at the 1:00 show. Sad.

To clarify the 2nd to last paragraph, Bigfoot owns the theatre and Carmike is still its operator. Go to the Crest’s website and there are Carmike promotion ads on the bottom of the homepage.

I drove by Saturday, it looks like a fake theatre set up as a movie prop. They are still showing Big Foot’s Deep Gold in 3D, probably to empty showings.

I think the Crest has had the most lives and changes of all the theatres in Westwood over the years, but it keeps on going.

with the state of cinema these days it’ll be a boarded up shell before long

I guess we should be happy Regency took over the Village and Bruin. I’m happy the Crest is still in business; if they want to be dorks and call it the Bigfoot Crest it is still better than driving by a boarded up shell (like the Festival).

Apparently this theater is no longer majestic. The word has been taken off the marque and replaced with…

Bigfoot.

Yes, you heard it here first: this theater is now the Bigfoot Crest. Doesn’t quite have the same ring, does it? You think I’m kidding? You think I’m a clown? Do I amuse you? See for yourself:

If anyone is aware of films that originally premiered at the Crest Theatre in Westwood anytime between the mid 1940’s and early 1980’s, can you let me know the film titles? I’m trying to compile a list of movies that originally screened there. Many thanks.

I was watching an episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” in which Larry David catches a movie at the Crest. The interior is clearly visible and Larry does mention the Crest by name.

Don’t forget “Phantom of the Opera” special midnight screening tonight at the Crest. Tickets will probably be available at the door.

For my money the best deal in town is the El Capitan: $11 to see The Nightmare After Christmas in 3D, 4D effects, a bell bracelet with the El Capitan name to shake during the movie, and the Wurlitzer organ that rises from the orchestra pit for a half hour pre-show live performance.

tlsloews, it was called the Loews Crest Theatre. Just like the Paramount Theatre in Hollywood was renamed during this time the Loews.

The Crest is now on the Carmike website and actively ticketing on Fandango.

William

Loews was around late 60’s to early 1970’s.
