I really never believed that a theatre would be built but I was hoping it would happen. The last neighborhood theatre in this area closed in 1995.

There may be copies filed with the NYC Department of Buildings office in Brooklyn. I know the architecture firm Urbitran was picked to do the plans for the new Marboro. Urbitran also was the firm drafted to do the plans for the expansion and renovation of the United Artists Sheepshead Bay Stadium 14 in back 2002.

I wonder what the architectural plans looked like. Is there anyplace where they would be on file and could be viewed?

No buyer just yet, the asking price is about 12.5 million, in comparison the Kingsway sold for 5 million in 2001 and the Fortway was just sold for about 4.5 million earlier this year. Is the Marboro property really that much more valuable?

Any word on a potential buyer?

Regal Entertainment Group was in the process of building a new theater on this site, (building permits were filed, and architectural plans were drawn up) when prospective buyers showed up at their door waving millions of dollars for this property.

They then decided its better to take the money and run, and as a result the UA Marboro property is currently being sold off, the dollar signs in their eyes were far greater than providing this community with a decent place to see a movie.

The UA Marboro was at one time part of the Randforce Theatres Circuit, which also included the Savoy, Walker, Duffield, Clinton, Ridgewood, Colonial, Beverly & Culver Theatres.

This was such a great movie theater. i remember when i went here when i was really young. Now, it stinks that I have to go really far to go to the theater, when I now live 2 blocks from the theater. They said that it would demolish and that they will rebuild it. But, there hasn’t been any construction.

I had one of the worst blind dates in the history of blind dates here, it was in the summer of 1997. My friend Joey’s latest girl-flavor Lisa hooked me up with her friend, some Chinese woman from Sunset Park: I think she was a nurse at Beth Israel.Anyway the 4 of us all decided to see Face Off with Nicholas Cage and John Travolta. Great movie… bad date.If I recall we were on the bottom floor, I don’t remember the sound or picture quality (due to the passage of time-and nothing else unfortunately:(

Yes, It’s sad but you can also say that about most of the neighborhoods in Brooklyn. I think there are 12 theatres in the whole borough.

There actually was a permit filed with the NYC Dept. of Buildings for the Repair and Upgrade Of the Existing Marboro Theatre back in June 2003 by the same design firm that handled the retrofit of the Sheepshead Bay, so I do believe it was on the drawing board at one point. Probably after carefull consideration they decided that it was just better to sell this property than to do the upgrade. It’s really a shame, Bensonhurst now will have no movie theatres at all.

I never really believed that the Marboro would be rebuilt as a multi-plex. There is no place to park and no land for a garage. Even know the theatre is 3 blocks from the subway and it is served by a major bus route (B6) people will only come if they can bring their cars. Sad to say all we can do is wait until the building comes down or is gutted for retail space.

This is a pathetic situation, I guess it was too good to be true that Regal was going to build a new theatre. People are so willing to flock to the horrid Sheepshead Bay, seems like the whole boro goes there.

During the demolition process the Kingsway owners also could not keep their property secure. The side doors on Coney Island Avenue would just be flapping open in the wind. Don’t property owners realize just how dangerous these abandoned theatre really are? The New York City Department of Buildings have a special phone number set up just for these type of dangerous buildings.

Of course, contrary to what they may believe, it IS Regal’s responsibility to maintain and consistently secure the Marboro, even though they’re selling the property. Totally clueless, totally helpless…

I finally heard from Regal Entertainment Group yesterday. They now claim that they have dropped their plans to redevelop the Marboro Theatre site into a modern day multiplex, the property is now up for sale. Regal claims that the new owner of the property can still make this into a movie theatre, but I doubt that will happen. I guess we will either get another drug store, or it will be turned into condos.

The side door to this place is just swinging in the wind, not secure at all. Anyone can basically walk in and really hurt themselves badly. Can’t Regal keep this place secure, so people can’t get hurt?

10 years ago when the Oriental(QV)closed, there were a few homeless people living in there, but they had a system of letting people in and out, and they treated the theater nicely by setting up garbage bags and keeping it clean! I saw that open door at the Marboro recently, but I was afraid to go in!

I saw 3 women and 2 guys wandering around inside last week. They looked like homeless. Unreal.

This was the place in Brooklyn to see the Sensurround premieres. Saw Earthquake, Midway, and Rollercoaster here with the monolithic speakers in the back and front of the theatre. Loved the disclaimer about how management was not responsible for any distress caused by Sensurround.

Passed by the Marboro yesterday it was still boarded up but one of the side doors looked unlocked, I guess there were squaters inside. The walls of the theatre have really become something of an eyesore because of all of the graffiti all over the walls, Regal painted over it once and now the graffiti is back.

In one of the top windows above the doors is a New York City Buildings Department Permit, unfortunately it’s posted up too high to make out what it says.

Does anyone have a date for the demolition of the Marboro yet? I’ll come down to Brooklyn to witness it.

YMike

Passed the Marboro on Sunday. One of the boards out front was pulled down and I guess anyone could enter the theatre if they wanted to.

It depends on what the area is zoned for. UA Court Street is 11 stories tall, I doubt they can get away with building something that size right on Bay Parkway.
