Speaking of theater organs, the Stambaugh Auditorium in Youngstown is in the process of having its pipe organ completely restored a two year process. According to a Vindicator article, it took 5 trucks just to transport the pipes.
The organ was water damaged, and when it was last used it was played at 25 percent of its capacity.
When it is returned the organ will be placed at center stage in the orchestra pit.

The new addition has a smaller auditorium and an upscale dining room.
As you will see from some of the new additions the total complex was renamed, but the main auditorium still retains the Powers name.
The smaller auditorium is used for smaller shows and recitals.
I recently received a phone call from the author and he will be sending me a signed book since I won’t be able to attend his Borders book signing on November 16th in Youngstown. If you happen to go, please tell him you know me via the internet as I told him about my interest in old cinemas via this website. Thanks.
I really hope that you can find the book. I have lent it to alot of people and they loved it. i literally stumbled upon one evening at Borders— i wanted a new book, couldn’t find one, was in the checkout with my fiancee ane picked it up out of curiousity. i took it home and had it finished by the next evening. AWESOME BOOK!!!
I called the Borders in Niles Ohio and they only had one copy which was NOT signed so may go through www.abebooks.com and get one for less, but won’t be a signed copy either. In the meantime, I am trying to locate a phone number for the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society as the author is president of that organization and they should have signed copies of Memories and Melancholy. Keep your fingers crossed!
if you have a borders bookstore nearby they have signed copies. you will love it. there are so many sections and great stories. all of hisoemotions and descriptions are wonderful. he writes so vividly about Idora Park i feel like i spent summers there, although im too young too have remembered. it closed when i was 8.
I did notice this summer while I was in Youngstown with friends that there is a Warner plaque in the flowered median which I stood and read in honor of the Warner name. And I wish the original marquee could have remained along with the name…WARNER!

I agree. whenever i talk to family a bout y_town’s rich history they all referto powers as the warner.Richard Scarsella’s book “memories and melancholy” had some wonderful recollections of the 4 theatres downtown. i loved that entire book and have read cover to cover several times. Love it.
The Powers is certainly a jewel for the City of Youngstown though for many in the community I’m sure it will always be the Warner.
as a dancer and now as a choreographer i’ve worked and danced in beautiful venues but powers is still my favorite. i now have students that love the complex just as much. its one thing to sit in the audience and watch different performances such as the symphony or dancing, but to perform on that stage is such an honor. my girls performed there last spring and absolutetly loved it. kudos to all who maintain the beauty and dignity to this institution. youngstown’s revitilization will happen if everyone can continue the positive efforts of powers. thank you!!

Yes, the original Wurlitzer organ would have been nice to have now that the Symphony Orchestra calls the Powers….home. But a huge thanks goes to Mr. and Mrs. Powers for even saving this theatre in the late 60’s.
That’s sad because it would have been great with the Symphony Orchestra. Thank goodness Stambaugh Auditorium still has their organ.
As to the State Theater organ, I didn’t even know that they had one.

That organ is no longer there. I worked Powers for 2 seasons and had full access to the auditorium and back stage and there was no theater organ there, so apparently it was sold before the theater became Powers Auditorium. It would be interesting to see where the organ went.

Four new photos have been added showing new Box Office and the Ford Recital Hall which is now being constructed on the west side of the Auditorium. The Ford Recital Hall will seat 600 people. The local Architect form Ricciuti Balog and Partners designed the new additions.
It’s truely wonderful to see just how much effort has been expel theater, and even more gratifying to see that “SOLD OUT” sign going up for just about every event.

This area of the lobby is truely beautiful, but then the whole facility is magnificant. The Youngstown Symphony Society deserves a huge amount of credit for maintaining the building in a magnificant way.
The front of the building has been restored to it’s original appearence except for the marquee and sign.
