We’ll see when it opens I guess. I’ll patronize it quite often I’m sure. It is only a block away from my apartment.
Sundance here in San Francisco isn’t THAT pricey. It can get there depending on when you go but they seem to have a lot more flexible pricing as far as charging less M-Th etc. etc.
I have the impression Sundance Cinemas are pricey. Not sure how much but they are a high-end theatre chain. It looks like WeHo, Hollywood area is getting to cost. The new owners have the nerve to charge $16.00 but cannot offer decent first run product. Arclight with Membership card and online purchases can run from $12.75 weekend and Saturday matinees and $15.00 evenings, holidays and all day SUnday. Still a better option than sitting in a stale AMC theatre with unruly patrons and endless advertising.
Glad Sundance Cinemas is taking over. Hopefully they have decent prices. I like to see two to three movies a week and can’t afford $16.00 a pop at Archlight. I don’t care how great the projection is.

There was a good turnout for the final night with nice crowds for Rampart, Melancholia and The Skin I Live In. The lobby was also full of well-wishers stopping by to say goodbye. I’m definitely curious to see what Sundance does with the space.
Nice that they replaced the seats in recent years. I expected to see some really old low back Irwins.
Sad to see Laemmle go, but I am looking forward to see what Sundance will offer.
I’m guessing they’re really closed now since the theatre is no longer in the Laemmle ad in the Los Angeles Times. In its place is a “Coming Soon” announcement for the upcoming North Hollywood location.
I was there this week and was told by staff that Tuesday, November 29 would be the final day.

It appears that today is the last day of The Sunset 5 as a Laemmle because The Los Angeles has all the current movies there listed as “Last Day”. A sad last day,indeed.
Sad to see Laemmle leaving, but I am glad Sundance is taking over. Arclight mostly killed the Sunset 5 buzz; Grove really does not book too much Indie and Foreign Language films.
Laemmle probably wants to place more energy on the Noho7 which has big potential for them. North Hollywood seems to have gained the edge that West Hollywood is losing. I really think the Noho theatres will be a success for Laemmle.
Glendale? Really? I thought it was decided that the Pacific theatres were enough for that area.
The Arclight and Grove really killed the Sunset 5 by stealing high profile independent films. The Sunset is unfortunately located right between those 2 so cannot play films showing at either one.

Hearing that it will close at the end of the month and turn into a Sundance cinema.
Opened August 19, 1992. Originally announced as an AMC Theatre.
Why is the function unknown? Theater is open.
The LA Times talked about the renovation of the Sunset mall today. Trader Joes where the Virgin store was and new Crate and Barrel store.
The Virgin Megatore is closed, but the revovations on the 8000 Sunset project are still underway. The Trader Joes IS going in. There is new cushy seating everywhere in the complex along with lots of new trees & plants. They are also installing a roof over the plaza escalator, presumeably so that it can be operated in inclement weather.
Didn’t the huge Virgin store at this location already close?
I’ve had a feeling the Sunset 5 may not be long for this world, especially considering how Laemmle has mostly been losing out on top bookings since the Arclight opened.
Friday night I was at the Virgin Megastore; it is closing at the end of the month because the owners of the complex will not renew thier lease. They did want to stay and even offered to downgrade to one floor. The renovation construction has ceased. There was going to be a new Trader Joe’s where the Guitar Store was, now that is not going to happen. It appears that the whole complex may be torn down. Gone will be whatever is remaining there including the Laemmle SUNSET 5 theatres. I’m not sure how accurate this info is and if it is true how quickly it will happed. But another high profile theatre in L.A. looks to be biting the dust.
The current auditorium seating capacities are 190, 190, 198, 250, 290.
