Below is a letter that I received from the owner of the Rogers Theater, Gary Kulas. He has asked me to spread the word so please help him restore the art deco cinema in Shelby NC by voting in the month of April. I plan to vote and I hope everyone on CT votes to save another historical theatre! On the link there is a brief narrated video that will show the work being done, to date.
Hello,
My name is Gary Kulas and I am the new owner and developer of The Rogers Theater in Shelby, NC. If you are not familiar with The Rogers Theater, it was built in 1936 as an Art Deco Design, 650 seat movie house. It has set empty for 25 years and is now trying to gather funds for restoration.
The reason I’m emailing you is to please ask for your help. It won’t cost you a cent and will only take a couple minutes of your time. The Rogers Theater is in a voting contest for a $250k grant from the Pepsi Co. This money is crucial to the success of the theater. If you would click on Pepsi’s website www.refresheverything.com/rogerstheater to vote for our success it would mean so much to us. Once you click on the “vote for this idea” button, you’ll be transferred to a sign in page. The first time you sign in takes a couple minutes. When you come back to vote the next day, it’ll be much quicker. The site will send you back to The Rogers Theater page to vote after you’ve signed in and you’ll need to click “vote” again. You can vote once a day, everyday for up to 10 causes, but please only vote for us in the $250k category. Please remember that you must vote after you’ve signed in. Thank you so much for your help, it is greatly needed.
After signing the petition I rec’d a letter from the Baltimore Development Corporation, President M.J. Brodie. If other CT members signed the petition, they will probably receive this letter, too.
I have posted the MLive article on the Capitol link and hope to contact Charles Ahronheim. Many of the theatres listed in the MLive article aren’t included on CT such as the Rex.
It would be interesting to chat with the Chuck Ahronheim who is mentioned in the MLive article. Even though Chuck and a brother failed in their attempt to save the Capitol their efforts are to be applauded!
tisloews: You are welcome. I pride myself on the theatre related stories that I find through different sources and being able to share them with fellow cinema treasures members.
Has any attempts at restoration been started, of late? I plan to visit Mount Morris NY this spring after going to see another DeAngelis designed theatre, the Strand/Brockport NY.
jude: So nice to know that one of our own on CT was the brainchild of the grand prize! It sounds like great things are happening in Childress in regards to the Palace. Congrats to all.
creed: Yes, a step forward and congratulations! I never heard from Lou Dobbs and his hometown theatre. Perhaps you have some information you could share?
Plant City seems to have the former State AND the Capitol. The art deco State should still be a theatre and not an antique store as the exterior still seems to look like a theatre!
tisloews: Yes, sadly another has been lost though its never easy to see them go for whatever reason or reasons!

An organ is….good news!

Richard G: I, too, have visited the Palace in Canton though didn’t see the Harding Hotel lobby…sounds like I missed a “must see”.

This link shows a photo and story of a 2008 fundraiser campaign where the grand prize was a 1957 Chevy.

This theatre and the Paramount in NYC are mentioned in the history of the legendary musical group, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
