It was known as the Berkeley Cinema 1 & 2 that opened on Friday May 20,1977 as Goldsboro’s first-ever multi twin cinema under Stewart and Everett Theatres with a seating capacity of 600(300 seats each in both auditoriums).
I have found the original ad for the Grand Opening of the Buccaneer Theatres. The information for this theatre will be revised and upgraded. I do have in my possession the original ad from the Greenville Reflector from June of 1977.
The Buccaneer Theatres opened in June of 1977 as a twin cinema and later on during the early-1980’s it was a three screener under Consolidated Theatres.
Interesting comment about the TRYON HILLS THEATRE:
It was one of several theatres in the South(when it was a single screen cinema)that had the longest-running movie to ever played here “WALKING TALL” that played to capacity crowds for a record of 36 weeks before it ended in December of 1973.
The TRYON HILLS,brought it back as a re-release too where it played for over 18 weeks in mid-1974. Reason, they could not keep up with the capacity crowds that came back to see it again and again.

THE SOUTHPARK MALL CINEMAS or CINEMA I & II
Under General Cinema Corporation opened on August 21,1970 with a seating capacity of 800(400 seats each in both auditoriums)as a twin cinema. The second auditorium was split down the middle to add a third auditorium later on during the mid-1970’s that had a seating capacity of 300. It closed in 1999.
ctwrenn:
Actually the original STAR WARS movie played first-run at the Cross Creek Mall Cinema I-II-III in Fayetteville on June 17,1977 and played there for 27 weeks. It did not play anywhere at the Cardinal.
THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK played first-run at Fayetteville’s Bordeaux Cinema I-II-III on May 18,1980. It was one of five cities in the state of North Carolina that played it first-run in 70mm Dobly Stereo.
THE RETURN OF THE JEDI played first-run at Fayetteville’s Cross Creek Mall Cinemas I-II-III on May 25,1983. It played on 2 screens at Cross Creek Mall and it DID NOT play first-run at neither the Cardinal NOR the Bordeaux.
“AND NOW THERE ARE THREE….”
Now we have three inviting auditoriums to better serve the community with a choice of the finest films.
THE PARK TERRACE-The ULTRA MODERN SHOWPLACE!!
MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM PLITT SOUTHERN THEATRES!!!
Grand Opening Features for December 10,1982…..
SCREEN 1: Richard Pryor and Jackie Gleason in THE TOY
The Park Terrace was triplexed on December 10,1982 where the original auditorium was split in two sections making the seating capacity of 500 seats each in both auditoriums. The second auditorium(which opened in 1975)had a seating capacity of 600 and it was equipped with a 6 Track Dobly Stereo Sound system and was capable of showing films in 70mm. The second auditorium showed the 70mm presentations of “THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK”,“ALIEN”,“RETURN OF THE JEDI”, “INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM”,and “TOP GUN”
I have the original ad from the December 10,1982 edition of the Charlotte Observer.
THE MOVIES AT BRIER CREEK OR BRIER CREEK STADIUM 14 opened on December 17,2003 by Eastern Federal Corporation. The premiere attraction for its grand opening was “LORD OF THE RINGS:RETURN OF THE KING” playing on three screens. Eastern Federal operated the Brier Creek 14 from 2003 to 2005 when Regal Entertainment took over after Regal’s acquisition of Charlotte-based Eastern Federal.
It is outrageous the admission price they charged for IRON MAN 3……not to mention the outrageous prices that they charged for a movie in IMAX and 3-D…..
Whatever happened to 70mm and 6 Track Dobly Stereo?
gunnarbiker:
The Town and Country Twin got a lot of the big blockbuster hits…..I remember seeing not only “Star Wars” here but “The Empire Strikes Back”,and “Return of the Jedi” played here before capacity sold out crowds…..“Jaws” played here when it was a single screen theatre in 1975…I remember the lines that stretched from one end of the shopping center to the other. Also played here were “Superman:The Movie”, “Grease”,“Saturday Night Fever”,and “Close Encounters” first-run billing here.
Other movies that played here too from “E.T.”, “Indiana Jones”, “Back To The Future”, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”, the original “Die Hard” movie and the original “Batman” movie got first-run billing to “Jurassic Park” and I fondly remember seeing “Jurassic Park 2:The Lost World” which played to capacity crowds on two screens in June of 1997! Such great memories of this theatre. Like you it irrates me that they demolished it and replaced it with a high price/overbilled Texas Steakhouse Restaurant where the theatre once stood. I remember seeing movies in both Southern Pines/Aberdeen and as far away as Rockingham, but I’m like you that Southern Pines/Aberdeen is not the nice hometown that it used to be. It lost it with me when they put a 10-screen multiplex on the opposite end of town closing both the Town & Country 2 and the Carmike 4 indefinitely. Just to show you that the 10-screen multiplex is basically the ONLY movie theatre in town(The Sandhills Cinema 10 is listed on the Cinema Treasures site)with high price admission and outrageous prices they charge for a bag of popcorn.
raysson: In case you need to make necessary corrections, let me remind you that the PLAZA THEATRE or the PLAZA CINEMA was NEVER EVER an ULTRAVISION theatre! This needs to be seriously corrected!!!
For the record….the only ULTRAVISION that was East of Raleigh was in Jacksonville for the Cardinal Theatre and just to let you know Greenville NEVER EVER had an ULTRAVISION theatre in that city!!!!
THE PLAZA THEATRE under Stewart and Everett opened on August 26,1968 as a 530-seat single screen theatre with Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon in Neil Simon’s
“THE ODD COUPLE”…..basically the cinema had the same architectural design as the Parkwood Theatre in Wilson which opened the same year as this one. Was twinned in 1975 as the PLAZA CINEMA 1 & 2 with a second auditorium added on to the original auditorium with 325 seats, making the total to 855. By late-1977 or early-1978 it expanded to three screens renamed the PLAZA CINEMA 1-2-3 under Stewart and Everett where the original auditorium was carved into two sections keeping the second auditorium intact for bigger presentations adding on 340 seats making the total seating capacity of 1,195 seats. Carmike Cinemas acquired the PLAZA TRIPLE THEATRES in 1986 after it’s acquisition of Stewart and Everett.
I have the original newspaper ad from the Raleigh News and Observer that indicated upon it’s May 25,1983 general release that the movie RETURN OF THE JEDI did played here, but it was NOT mentioned anywhere in the ad that the film was in 70mm…NOR anywhere in the ad that film was mentioned in DOBLY STEREO. As Michael Coate quoted in on this site that the MISSION VALLEY and the CARDINAL were absent from the 70mm presentations. At the time the film opened MISSION VALLEY was a twin theater and the film played in it’s largest auditorium with a seating capacity of 515.
ONLY two cities in the state had RETURN OF THE JEDI presented in full 70mm-6 Track Dobly Stereo upon it’s May 25,1983 release:

“THIS MOVIE IS SO BIG,WE’RE SHOWING RETURN OF THE JEDI ON OUR TWO HUGE AUDITORIUMS WITH MATINEES EVERYDAY!!!”
Sorry, No S&E Passes or Special Discount Tickets. Due to the capacity crowds, theatre will be cleared after each performance.
To avoid nightly crowds,we strongly urge movie patrons to attend our matinees during each performance!!!!
