The theater already looks much better from being cleaned. I wonder what they will do with the billboards that say ‘newsreel’. I’ve kind of grown attached to them. A little bird told me that the clock is being repaired also.
It does look later than the 1880’s. Does anyone know if there is a CT page for the movie theater on the Queen Mary? I think its called the Royal. I’m going there tomorrow and wanted to see if there was any information about it.
Wow, that’s an amazing photo. Am i correct that the College Theater would be in between the building with the Coca-Cola advertisement and the California Club?
I’m sure with enough money a floor could be un-leveled, but I don’t think anyone in that neighborhood is prepared to spend the money. The clientèle surrounding the theater don’t seem to even be aware that the building was a theater. When I go in there they look at me like I’m the crazy one looking up at the ceiling.
I think the bank was always on the corner. I looked at the old Sanborn map and it was there. The theater was next to it to the west where the bank parking lot is now…..I think. BofA has a long history of remodeling their own buildings into something out of Logan’s Run or Planet of the Apes. That’s why I wonder if the original bank is underneath that stucco monstrosity.
I like the cover art but I’d like to see a few plain black and white photos for the detail. I don’t know where you live but I’d be happy to scan them for you. I live at Olympic & La Cienega. It would only take a few minutes and then you could have the originals plus a cd with them on it for safekeeping. I’d also like to see if the BofA building was just covered over with 80’s slop or if it is a whole different building.
I know…I guess I didn’t word it properly…I just want to see a photo of the theater. I always eat at Nick’s across the street and stare at that parking lot.
are you taking photos of your computer screen? you know there’s a little camera icon in adobe reader that lets you select any part of the pdf and saves it as a jpg….just thought it would be less work for you.
I wish i could find a picture of this theater other than the one on the cover of that book. I live right around the corner and would like to see what was on the present day parking lot.
ken mc….you’re right but i still was able to connect. When I did the dropdown to Historical LA Times it went to a strange log in page and automatically put the account name of IPAUTO in the box. I just put any password and hit ‘connect’ and it worked. There’s a bunch of stuff about copyright issues on the log in page, so maybe they just want to force people to read it before they can log in. Let me know if you’re successful.
I’ve been in the State on the walking tour but they were very serious about NO CAMERAS…..probably because they painted everything white and put up those disgusting stained glass crucifixes where the organ pipes should be!
It’s true that the shenanigans of the stars were getting on the nerves of people who had just entered the depression but the actual code could only enforce the rules about movie content. Mainly violence and sex and making sure that if the character did bad then they had to pay in the end. The code had no power over the personal lives of movie stars. The movie studios did their own policing and hushing and covering up for their own stars….not because they were moral but to protect their investment against an increasingly ‘moral’ population. I wonder how Parasite Hilton would have fared in that atmosphere.

All I’ve been able to find out is that it was added to the ship in the 60’s or 70’s and seats 150 people.

But the California Club is still on the corner….could it have been demolished and the Title Guarantee built by 1929-1930 if the photo is that late?

I think you’re correct Joe….also I wonder if the back of the building you can see at 8th would be the Garrick which would be replaced by the Tower.
It’s backwards!

That’s why I was confused. There are so many books and sites that say it was Tally’s, some of them pretty reliable. But 1896 would predate Tally’s.

Yeah Joe, its almost as bad in there as the Westlake…..TRASH!
I hope you’re joking about Esther Williams….if not, rent The Mambo Kings….
did you walk in there and look around?

When our little group went in the docent told us to hide our cameras because the church people would freak out but you’re a rebel.
Me too…she’s really nice and I found out she’s also an author.

I remember now….the lady who owns the new Metropolis Books on Main between 4th & 5th told me that the building was going to be demolished.
I live near here and walk by this building frequently…maybe someday I’ll get up my nerve and walk in there on a Sunday just to see what’s left inside.
ken mc, didn’t somebody say they wanted to tear down the building across the street? I think I heard that somewhere but I don’t remember where either.
