Enjoy!! By the way, when you e-mail Craig, as I do often, put in a good word not only for some Classics, but the upcoming Spielbergs, and next April, “Titanic” in 3-D; it’s only July and the “buzz” is on!!
While I’m at it, I have to recommend an absolute must which will NOT be at the Ziegfeld, but should be—“Another Earth,” opening on July 20th or 22nd. I’ve already seen it twice in previews, and will be back for more—one of the most interesting, original, thought-provoking, well acted and written films you will see this year. A big hit at Sundance, and, I think, next Oscar time.
Sorry about the double double? Craig O' Connor at Clearview is very mellow when it comes to suggestions. E-mail him () and let him know. Are you seeing “Transformers” today at the Ziegfeld? There’s also a “Twilight Zone” marathon on SyFi.
My pleasure, Joe is very cool. By the way, I’ve recently learned ( where have I been?) that Spielberg has directed not one, but two films that are coming out around Christmas, “The Adventures of Tintin” and “War Horse.” I always look forward to being at the Ziegfeld on Christmas day (interesting thinking about that on July 4). Anyway, I hope that one of these will be there that day.

I want to help you out here. Call the theater (see my last post) and ask to speak to Joe, the projectionist. He is a supreme professional, has been in the business for years, is friendly and really knows his stuff.
He has always been helpful to me when I have introduced the classics, and I can’t say enough about him. I last saw him at one of the Met Opera HD presentations, and was shmoozing with him. He is very much from the “old school.” Ask him what you need to ask, he’s very proud of his profession.
Excellent question, I’ve heard about this issue-here’s the direct phone number to the Ziegfeld. You’ll be able to ask 212-307-1862. Let us know what they say ASAP.
Nice to see some dialogue here again. James Cameron is re-releasing “Titanic” next April in 3-D to coincide with the anniversary of the actual event. I’ve written to Craig about bringing it yo the Ziegfeld. Do I have a second on the motion?
900 people at the Ziegfeld today !! 900 people at the Ziegfeld today! 900 people at the Ziegfeld today !! A near capacity crowd streaming up the stairs and escalator, through the lobby, nearly filling the theatre, an electric atmosphere of enthusiasm and delight, and for what, you ask—-something from 1853, “Il Trovatore” by Verdi.
Hi:
Can someone help me out? I’ve been up to the Lafayette many times, but no longer have a car. I want to come up for “Cover Girl” this Saturday. How easy is it to take NJ Transit from Penn Station in Manhattan up to the Suffern Station? Can I walk from the station to the theatre?
The Loew’s Kings Theater in Brooklyn
APRIL 6, 2011, 4:54 am
I was happy to hear recently that the Loew’s Kings Theater in Brooklyn, New York will be undergoing renovations for a reopening in 2014 . It was one of those beautiful old movie palaces of the past. I was 13 years old when I first started spending many a wonderful afternoon there, partly because it had double features, air conditioning and great ice cream cones.
I’d like to set the record straight on one point. Some articles have said that I was an usher there. That wasn’t the case … I was just a kid, a paying customer, a movie lover. Just for the record, a few years later, I did usher in Manhattan’s theater district, which was wonderful, because I got to see the plays for free.
Way out of my league. The only news I care about is stuff like this about the Kings….and the weather report. Or as the Who once sang, “Meet the new boss same as the old boss.”
Bobby, go outside, it’s a beautiful day and then watch a good old movie.
I did go on a private tour of the Paradise when it was in the process of restoration, but never got back there, want to. Check out the web site. Looks Great.
I must say that given the 175th Street is both a church, a concert venue, and still really a grand movie palace gives one hope and as Tim Robbins said in “Shawshank,” hope is a good thing.
Thank you, now imagine going to a concert there (as I did) or a church service, in all that original (restored) movie palace splendor and keep your eye on the resurrected Kings. It’s almost like that line from “Citizen Kane”-I think I have this mostly right-“Take a good look Jedediah, it’s going to look a lot different one of these days.”
That’s how I felt last August standing on Flatbush Avenue, looking at the Kings.
By the way, Mr. Orlando Lopes, who appears in that video, is the world’s leading expert on the Kings.
Yes, Flatbush Avenue is as multicultural as NYC itself, and is thriving….and it doesn’t matter what the building is called.
Check this out and you will see what I mean:
I’m optimistic. 42nd street between Broadway and Eighth Ave. was once the hell hole that you see in “Midnight Cowboy” and “Taxi Driver.” Today it is the magnet of Times Square with fabulous theatres, hotels, restaurants, shops, and throngs of people, and it all started when Disney decided to have a presence on Broadway at the “New Amsterdam.” Along came “The Lion King” and the rest is history.
I stood outside the chained up Kings last August and envisioned opening night 2014. I walked a thriving neighborhood bristling with people, culture, and enthusiasm. If you build it, they will come.
The pictures of the Kings interior, however disheartening, are certainly not as bad as the New Amsterdam looked before its glorious resurrection. In fact, I’m I’m surprised the interior looks as good as it does. When done, the Kings is going to be AMAZING. The Ziegfeld is NY’s last single screen movie palace, and I love the place, but the Kings will be something else, again.
Thank you for your detailed and informative update. As someone who is completely enthralled by the redevelopment of the Kings, I’m anxiously waiting for the work to begin….and to be there opening night. Well, I probably won’t be invited, so let’s make it the next night. This is even more exciting than the New Amsterdam revival in 1997. I was there on the second or third night for “King David,” and returned for both “The Lion King” and “Mary Poppins.”
Definitely, definitely go see the “new” Metropolis at the Ziegfeld. It will be a mind-blowing experience. I had the good fortune to see it at Grauman’s Chinese as the closing film of the TCM festival. What you see at the Ziegfeld will never, ever be duplicated on the largest home theatre you can imagine in Blu-ray. Something you will always remember.
With no disrespect to NYC’s Film Forum, which has great programming, and where it already played, the Ziegfeld experience cannot be matched.
You should not expect Radio City Music Hall, which, if I had my druthers would still be showing films, at least periodically. Instead, you should expect the last NYC has to offer (which is damn great)in a single big screen, thousand plus seat, great sound movie going experience. You will also have the experience, if LeRoy is there, which he usually is, of getting a friendly, “Welcome to the Ziegfeld, where the best seat in the house is the one you’re sitting in.”
More than that would include “spoilers”
I am the Ziegfeldman and I approve of this message. I love the place.
Down here from NYC, visiting, and went to the Tampa last night—absolutely exquisite. Thank heaven this polace was saved, a true model of a real palace, with lights in the heavens. Other cities should learn from this. Saw a great film-“Farewell” This is what Marcus Loew meant by his famous quote!!!!!!!!!!!!
I couldn’t agree with you more—I was at the TCM festival in Hollywood and another is in the works for next year. To see, on the big screen, at the Chinese Theatre and the Egyptian, “A Star is Born,” “King Kong,” “Sweet Smell of Success,” “The Producers,” “North by Northwest,” “Singin' in the Rain,” “The Good Earth” (with Luise Rainer present at 100 years old!!)and the glorious restored METROPOLIS—well EVERY screening was like that “All About Eve” night at the Ziegfeld.
We have all enjoyed classic screenings at the Ziegfeld, this board is on fire when the classics are being shown.
We got a great start to this just a few years ago—it shouldn’t die. It musn’t. Lets let Craig and Clearview know how much this all means to us.
The key word is “Exclusive”—if the Ziegfeld had an exclusive on “Inception” can you imagine what the results might have been. With no disrespect to the Film Forum, which has amaxing classic programming, the FF is showing “ a spectacular new 4K digital restoration ” of “The Bridge on The River Kwai” in September. Can you imagine this on the Ziegfeld screen?
There is bound to be some downtime this fall for some movies shown “the way they were meant to be seen.”
Please, please contsct Craig via e-mail ,
Remember that wonderful night with Rosbert Osborne, Elaine Stritch and “All About Eve”?
There is a beautiful book on the New Amsterdam published when the theater reopened:
NEW AMSTERDAM, THE: THE BIOGRAPHY OF A BROADWAY THEATER
still available on Amazon and worth the price. That theater was in far worse shape, as detailed in before/after shots. It shows you what the Kings can be.
Enjoy!! By the way, when you e-mail Craig, as I do often, put in a good word not only for some Classics, but the upcoming Spielbergs, and next April, “Titanic” in 3-D; it’s only July and the “buzz” is on!!
