What happened to West Side Story and members of the cast?. This place was built for MGM films from the Hollywood factory days. I want that to be my first visit. How about some cinemascope movies from the 50’s. They would be great there as opposed to the Loews Jersey with its narrow proscenium.
Hey rivjr it has been noted numerous time on this site that King Kong was at the RKO Roxy not the Roxy. In fact somewhere Warren posted the opening ad which clearly states the theaters.
Did negotiations fail or was he ill? I think his not doing Student Prince was a great loss and in The Hills of Rome(I believe,is there a 7 in there?)this 30 something looks 50 something.
Concerning Los Memory’s picture of opening night of SOM at the Rivoli does anybody have the picture I once saw in a publication?
This showed a line of people outside the Rivoli waiting to buy their reserved seat tickets and showed a closeup of one of the outdoor displays showing pictures from the film.
If you could post it I would greatly appreciate it.
If you sit in the first 5 rows of one of the Quad Cinemas the screen is huge.
Though the presentation was awful the Cinerama screen was great. It’s the size the screen of a theater of the Ziegfeld’s dimensions should be. I remember coming in late after the intermission and looking at the screen from the cross-aisle separating the Orch from the Mezz and thinking ‘Wow that screen is big!'
All they needed to install was a curtain.
I guess I just remember the screens at the Criterion, Rivoli and Warner Cinerama where I found the screens larger and better placed in relation to the audience.
This is surprising as the Ziegfeld was built in the 60’s and they were still building excellent single screen theaters. Too bad the Ziegfeld wasn’t one of them.
I wish as well the Music Hall would have a festival of early cinemascope features before they shrunk to Panavision size. When I saw Seven Brides there in the late 70’s I had never seen a screen that wide in my life. The barn raising scene was stupendous.
That video is very frustrating. Nothing but pure editing. Just as your eye realizes what it is seeing it cuts away. How wonderful it would be to see newsreels of film openings at the Hall and the lines waiting for the hit films down to Fifth Av with shots of the marquee to see what was playing.
And then all the films ever taken of the stage shows.(Though you could leave out the 70’s as they were pretty weak.)
Wasn’t Marooned the only roadshow to ever play at the Ziegfeld.
I believe everything else was advance tickets general seating.
And why did they roadshow that?
To Archives,
Do you know the size of the screen and if it was curved when the Sound of Music played there in 70mm in the mid 60’s?
Did you see it there along with My Fair Lady at the St James?
What were the experiences like?
Is the current screen comparable in size to the original?
OK Bill, rub it in. Another great one I missed.
How about a billionaire building a Cinerama house in New York just so we can see 2001 again. The Ziegfeld screen is too small for that movie.
Boy if I had known about the East Rutherford convention I would have been there like a shot to see the two of them. I would have love to have met them. How do you people find out about these things?
I heard this was going to be shown at the Paradise in the Bronx with some of the cast members. Is this still true?
By the way I have been watching the making of the film on the DVD and it is interesting that though a number of important cast members appear George Chakiris does not. does anybody know why.
Just had a chance to go through the Ziegfeld revival schedule.
Wow what a dud.
The only interesting films have been shown a gazillion times in revival houses and on TCM.
Of course if you were born after 9/11 there might be something interesting to see.
Last year despite numerous protests Mayer Bloomberg decided to allow demolition of the Roxy. CNN and MSNBC had constant coverage and though there were proposals to convert it into a Starbucks the cost would have been too great and a more modest coffee shop was built in its place.
What about the story about how our great leaders allowed this to happen. Years of willful neglect, ego and stupdity. That’s the real story. We all know what happened after.
Has anybody seen Rose Marie in cinemascope? Is it any good or is it one of those low budget muddy ansco color studio bound remakes MGM seemed to be grinding out at the time.
Both of those have wonderful films series and in classic theaters.
The one I’d avoid like the plague would be the sing along West Side Story. Maybe one of the most god awful ideas I’ve ever heard of in my life. To turn this film into a camp fest is pretty horrible.

Warren,
Does The Vagabond King still exist?

That photo shows why the screen is too small for that theater despite the fish eye lens.

Do you think Chris Plummer will show up for Sound of Music?
Whenever they show My Fair Lady in the NY area it is always in 35mm. Does this mean it no longer exists(again) in 70mm?
OK Bill, rub it in. Another great one I missed.

The last time I saw Superman was at the Criterion where it should have opened instead of the dreadful Astor Plaza.

Ken’s photof of downtown Milwaukee is heartbreaking. How beautiful these city centers were. And to think that all the major cities had this.

As Roxy used to say “Don’t give the people what they want, give them something better.” And boy did he know what he was talking about.
