I forgot to mention I watched the 35mm film ‘Pee Wees Big Adventure’ In Dolby Stereo surround sound here when It was released. Now ‘Pee Wee’ is no longer with us but I will always remember him in this fun movie every time I enter the Rio Theatre to watch a stage show.
That nice re creation of a lobby deco ceiling light I think would look better with some color lights inside not white. People need to see the floor in the lobby but I think there are enough recessed can ceiling lamps to give the extra white light needed.
I was so busy taking photos before the movie started next door last week that many of my movie friends tell me that may have been Quantin himself having breakfast on the far right of this photo? Too bad I was not more cued in as I would have thanked him for saving the Vista and we could briefly talk about 35mm/70mm presentation and my 16mm film collection.
Complain or e mail when you go on the weekends when American Cinematheque runs the new Egyptian. They don’t bother to open or close the new blue curtain. They just show a slide image most of the time. The Netflick guys do use the curtains during the mid week. If they want to have a slide up at least close the new Blue main drape and open on the movie and close near the end of the credits please. AC show some class. Netflick is not in the movie theatre business they live in a 16x9 streaming TV world, Now they own and have bought 3 or 4 old cinemas and have restored them nicely so their TV movies show and sound good on a big movie theatre screen for a few weeks. Most of the Netflick top brass don’t have a clue about running a movie theatre or aspect ratios ect. At least at the Egyptian they know how to use the drapes correctly. AC needs to see what they are doing mid week with SHOWMANSHIP in presentation at the Egyptian Theatre. Must be a different projection booth staff when Netflick runs the place.
The old UA Hollywood Egyptian Theatre had a big parking lot behind the stage house for many years. Seems all over Hollywood they are building apartments or condos. I see they built a new housing unit behind the new AC/Netflick Egyptian Theatre back stage wall. Soon there will be no parking lots left to park near or around Hollywood Blvd.
Thy used the place in the new film shot in Hollywood ‘MaXXXine’ You can also see the Vine Theatre next door in the film with the marquee letters up from a movie in 1985.
Outside needs some sort of marquee to let people going by what is showing inside. Former store building turned into a cinema. Some nice old projectors on display in the side lobby space.
The theatre needs a darker side wall paint, curtains that open and close plus color lights on the side lights, darker ceiling tiles and mainly new seats. Those old wooden seats are very uncomfortable and can tip over. The Edison Theatre could use some sort of neon/LED type marquee outside to let people know what is playing inside. The building was never a movie cinema to start with. The original Niles Theatre in Niles CA near Fremont CA burnt down. They have a great blow up photo of what the Niles Theatre neon marquee looked like at the entrance to the Edison auditorium. The Edison Theatre can project 35mm film along with 16mm movies and DCP. Nice lobby store with plenty of old movie DVD’s and books/mags/shirts for sale. Stop by If they are open for a short talking tour or catch a silent movie. Weekends are best. Bring a pillow for your seats. Thanks David for the photo.
I had hoped they would have gone with a Blue paint look but went with a light yellow mustard color. At least It is better then the deep Red It was for a time.
Thanks film for the photo. It wassad that the RKO Pantages Theatre on Hollywood Blvd had a large flat 70mm screen. Many Todd-AO and D-150 films that were meant for a curved roadshow screen got booked into the Pantages and shown on a flat not curved screen. Just up the street the UA Egyptian Theatre had many types of curved screens over the years. Of all Hollywood cinemas the Egyptian should have shown 2oth Century Fox’s ‘Cleopatra’ on their Todd-AO curved screen. I guess the Pantages people had more booking advance money $ then UA? When Mike Todd died the Todd-AO owners just let all the Todd=AO 70mm prints run on a flat 70mm screen also. Mike would have not have approved of this look.
Thanks Film. I remember seeing Cleopatra at the Randolph Theatre on a huge curved Todd-AO screen. It was so impressive with curtains and stereo surround sound.
Thanks Cineast for this great marquee photo. Now most movie theatres don’t use plastic letter marquees anymore. The ones that still have a nice neon marquee don’t bother to get up on a ladder to change what is playing inside each week. Just like gone movie ads in the newspapers change has taken place. Some movie theatres today now use flashing digital ones. The Liberty Theatre NYC had some great marquee displays. Thanks again
Will be so great when they re open with a new operator. They have two of the best large curved screens in California. The new mall owners also need to give them some advertising room both on Market ST and the street behind Mission ST. One of the problems before is that no one knew that a cinema was on the top floor of the mall. I wonder if the new theatre lease guys will be the former Century owners the Syufy family under Westwind Theatres like they moved into the long closed former Regal 9 Santa Cruz. SF needs more downtown movie theatres as there is only one complex now. All the visiting tourists will visit the new re opened cinemas If they can find It with some sort of name and marquee on what is playing inside on the outside of the mall building.
I wonder if the 70mm screen here at the ST James was flat or curved. After Mike Todd died the company was not so picky on having a curved screen for movies shot in 70mm Todd-AO. Many just advertised IN TODD-AO but It was not the way Mike wanted them to be shown when he was alive.
Depends on the outdoor screen coating used. I remember seeing many classic 3D films as a kid at a big outdoor drive in and things did pop off the screen in our car and had depth. The outdoor 3D sync projectors needed allot of projection light and a good dark screen lot area for the best 3D effect. No stereo sound at the drive in but a company did make 3 channel Eprad stereo speakers that very few outdoor theatres used.
Thanks Rives for the Cinerama ad. This theatre also showed Todd-AO. I wonder if they just used the Cinerama curved screen. It was not that big To bad there are no photos of the curved screen with curtains from this time period.
Former Encina DI. The whole place is still in place today except the large Cinemascope screen was taken down when the next door hospital bought the Skyview and are just using for parking. A waste as the candy counter, projection booth and box office are ready to open again. The hospital could still use the lot for parking during the day and run movies at least on the weekends. Just put up a big scope screen again. Don’t show first run movies but old classics.
Great DI located in the Santa Cruz CA mountains. Torn down in the mid 1950’s. I don’t think they ever put in a wide Cinemascope screen. Located near the Burl Theatre in Boulder Creek. That building is still in town but is a pizza place now with a second floor added. I remember as a small kid seeing ‘Scared Stiff’ with Jerry & Dean at the Skyview. Across from the golf course with a few homes built on the DI lot now. Thanks Rainbow for the calendar. I had collected many of these movie theatre listing and my dad tossed them all out one day when I was on vacation. A sad day for my collection.
RAE Thanks for the photo. Great colors you would never find this in a USA cinema. I guess It’s in Canada
With all the money Netflik spent on the Egyptian Theatre renovation what is all the patch up work above the old projection booth?

Even had a old baby cry room up back. Never had a loge section up stairs.

CC great Super 70mm CINERAMA ad for the Loews Capitol Theatre Thanks. Too bad like so many nice NYC roadshow theatres they are all gone and torn down.

Rainbow DI you must have MILLIONS of DI images. Thanks for sharing them. You could almost start your own forum with just Drive Inn Theatres.

Thanks Rainbow for the image. Looks like the Winner DI had a huge curved Cinemascope screen.
Great ad Dallas they need to bring a live stage show back like this again at some of the large downtown movie theatres for Oct 2024.
Thanks Rives for the Cinerama ad. This theatre also showed Todd-AO. I wonder if they just used the Cinerama curved screen. It was not that big To bad there are no photos of the curved screen with curtains from this time period.
