Ian(or anyone else for that matter)would you like to furnish me with your direct e-mail details through the CT message system? I can send you photographs of the Odeon Wolverhampton in particular which should be on that site but have got snarled up in a legal wrangle regarding funding between the local archive service and their website designers, and others which i have permission to photocopy but for copyright reasons can’t as yet be published universally.

Wolverhampton. Its a Grade II listing from 2000. The application nailed to the door on Thursday seeks permission from the council to demolish “if necessary”. I’ve passed on the details to the CTA for their attention.

Regarding Ken Roe’s posting on 1st August 2006, I’m collaborating with the owner of the Cinerama.Topcities site as we speak to keep everyone refreshed with new material regarding the roadshow days in the 1960’s of the Astoria,Casino, and Coliseum cineramas(and the Odeon,Marble Arch also).I’m posting up on that site from my collection ads printed on the opening days of each new programme. There’s a new feature on the premiere of Krakatoa at the Astoria on there,(see “what’s new”) and my full-page ad will follow by the end of April. At the moment I’m a bit distracted at the moment by a bid by my local authority to demolish my listed Odeon.

Unless i’ve missed the reference in all the squillions of reports here previously, there’s a feature on the Odeon York on this website:

As a research worker in my own job I have sight of some of the many millions of local history websites in the UK so will keep my eye open.

My national Science Museum here in England has done a small family-album tribute to Arthur C.Clarke, which includes some rare behind-the-scenes photos of 2001.

Go to “Galleries” on the black-lettered horizontal list and follow the drop-down list.

Bill Heulbig-I’ll get on with the job as soon as possible. Most of my newspaper archive collection is stored-understandably for insurance purposes let alone the space requirements-in a regional public library which for Public Holiday reasons will be closed until after the Easter period. However Bill, if you want to leave me a direct e-mail address, I will endeavour(my worn-out PC depending) to post you copies of one or two of the smaller scannable nuggets i have at home with me.

I’m also looking to be able to collect the obituaries from the more
established newspapers here in England as the weeks progress.

Rare-ish photo here chasps:– http://www.pbase.com/beppuu/image/92164027

There are a number of new local history sites springing up in my home(West Midlands) area. May be able to find a few more as we go on.

smoothie commented about Gaumont Birmingham on Mar 21, 2008 at 4:11 pm

Ken,according to the CT search index, the Odeon,Queensway ain’t listed. Or is it me?

Did you notice on the photo that the Scala had become the “Cala” as the downward “S” had dropped off! I can think of some pubs locally that had that happen, but the resulting name got a bit risque. LOL

I haven’t forgotten about making up a profile about this one, nor some of the many West Midlands' theatres i’ve promised to do.I’ll find a space in my busy existence as soon as possible!

If anyone is interested, I will be sending over soon to the www.cinerama.topcities.com site some more publicity material of Cinerama movies from the 1960’s and 1970’s, of 2001 in this instance, from my privately owned 3,000 film advert and review collection to be put up on there.Broadsheet ads from the London newspapers/brochures even!

Can anyone explain to me how one scans in things bigger than A4 size(do you just take pot luck with a digital camera?). Also how can I link images I’ve scanned in to link in here? I don’t have my own website-yet.

Talking of which, can anyone recommend a reliable hosting provider? Has to be cheap though.

p.s. I hope Manchester members don’t get squeamish about a Brummie rummaging around in their local history. I was a Manchester/Stockport ratepayer between 1986 and 1996 LOL.

Correction to previous comment:Date should read March 4,2008.

smoothie commented about Odeon Manchester on Mar 9, 2008 at 5:30 am

Incidentally, everyone! That link I put up on Mar 2004,2008 has about a dozen timeless photos of the Odeon. You can get to the rest via that lead url address,BUT you may need me to guide you through it. Apparently Manchester City council’s interest in Heritage and History stretches only to parking that site in amongst teacher’s pay rises and overdue books from the library.

I used to live and work in the Workingston/Carlisle area of the UK(just to be more specific for our overseas viewers LOL)1984-1989 in which i may have some chance photos amongst my heirlooms. They’re more likely to be of pubs though………

Ian ‘adoraKiaOral’ :sorry to be a snob, but “Bugsy Malone” hit the screens at the Leicester Square Theatre, not the Odeon. July 7 -August 23,1976 to be exact. Then transferred to the Odeon,Marble Arch and then in order to maintain a subsequent outlet in Central London when out on general release was parked at the Metropole and Odeon,Kensington simultaneously.

Ian-i’ve got ‘em all on paper. Past 45 (yes,45!) years even. Every movie since Elizabeth Taylor got bitten by her ass (or was it asp?) in Cleopatra. Soundtracks, posters, brochures too. Come over to Wolverhampton and taste the beer while yer at it!

Whoa! I’ve found this all-colour thingy from 1965: http://www.pbase.com/beppuu/image/92164027/
It’s not a Cinerama movie(on the largest screen then in Europe) but Julie Andrews in her 3 year marathon at this Cinerama house in “The Sound of Money”(quote:Pauline Kael).SuperCOLOURfragilistic eh?
I’ll sign autographs later for discovering this one LOL
