Anyway I saw it today and it was awesome! So cool to finally get to see it on the big screen for the first time. Awesome to get to see 70mm again. And it was very nice the way it was done with the full intro and exit music and light system etc. I don’t know how many read this often enough, but if you see this, you gotta find yourself out to see this here! My guess is Wed night will be the last showing? Do whatever you can to get here tomorrow or Wednesday! It’s a really rare experience to get (certainly unless you live in LA or NYC and even then, in the latter case, most of the special art houses that might maybe do this once in while tend to have pretty small screens, usually more like the very smallest and smaller ones at this theater, so it would be better here anyway).

screen is definitely not a 62' like the old Stanley Warner

I’d guess this one is more like 45'-48', my guess.

It’s smaller looking than the 56' at Rockaway. Larger looking than than the smallest at Rockaway and larger than the smallest and smaller at GS. It’s much smaller than the GS IMAX, noticeably smaller than the GS Dolby and seems smaller than #5 which is perhaps a 56' like the largest Rockaway ones. #15 here is not a mega screen, but not bad at all, and bigger than many of the 70s/80s mall cinemas had.

they did shoot some elements of SW and ESB on 70mm and a 70mm print even from 35mm looks a lot better than a 35mm print from 35mm, not as much generation loss

shockingly, Lincoln Square decided to not show it anyway, this theater is a lot easier than having to deal with the whole into NYC and out and all that expense even if the screen doesn’t match #2 at Lincoln interestingly, the only place I have ever seen 70mm projection in my life is in Paramus! Once for SW, once for ESB. (I had seen IMAX film at the Palisades Mall, but they sadly tore that true IMAX down, it was the only way for people outside of NYC to reasonably get to see true IMAX without having the total mess and waste of time doing crossings into and out of the city and tons of extra expense)

wonder why they don’t use #5 here for 70mm, that is the largest non-IMAX, non-Dolby

still #15 isn’t the smallest and it’s about as big (or bigger) than any of the 70s/80s/early 90s mall type theaters usually had, but not so big as #5,#2,#3.

What is the volume level like at the IMAX here? I remember when that auditorium was THX it was basically the only THX auditorium anywhere that actually had the volume set to a reasonable level, loud, but not ear ringing crazy loud. And the speakers were fantastic quality. When they switched it to IMAX did they keep the old speakers and do they run it at slightly more reasonable volume levels or full blast over the top typical IMAX levels?

I wonder why they never do 70mm here on one of the very largest screens.

@moviebuff82 – I don’t see where you get that. 2001 isn’t even listed to be shown at Rockaway as far as I can see.

@markp Nice! I was hoping 2001 would hit 70mm in NJ somewhere. (On a side note, I wonder if the big 60'+ screen at Lincoln Square will get this in 70mm).

Wonder if they are getting 2001 70mm here.
I see Paramus is getting it.

I was stunned they dumped Solo out of the IMAX so quickly here. That is the sort of film that screams IMAX a lot more than Oceans 8. Only two weeks is a bit little. Oh well, they lost my money.

If it was that dark for you then that theater stinks and must have been used a totally worn out bulb, there is no way it was so dark that you couldn’t tell who was who in any auditorium with decent projection. Sure it is dark, foggy, sometimes backlit lighting, but it’s always very easy to see who is who and looks fine.

Does anyone know why they seem to have totally stopped showing anything in IMAX 3D at this theater? Dolby 3D is way worse, but all the do for 3D now is Dolby (and on much smaller screens) now here.

alpinedownhiller
alpinedownhiller commented about AMC Rockaway 16 on May 4, 2018 at 12:40 am

What is weird is that this theater is not having any IMAX 3D showings of Solo at all! Kinda stinks since IMAX 3D is way better than Dolby 3D, brighter and less cross-talk. And since IMAX 2D is only 2K it’s kinda wasting what the IMAX screen does here much better than any other screen and that is 3D.

So they are showing the 3D showings on the inferior tech at 2K (on a much smaller screen) when that projector could be doing 2D at 4K and then showing it at 2D on the IMAX screen at 2K. They already have the Dolby screen giving it a large screen 2D 4K experience so it seems kinda weird.

I guess Jersey Gardens it is.

that happens when there is really bad weather and the main center is shut down, all the ticket sites claim they don’t sell AMC tickets

it happened during the last noreaster when tons lost power out in NJ, that time NYC had tickets, but northern NJ did not

Dolby Cinema looked like it was working normally again today, so it seems they fixed it.

(not that this is the place for this sort of talk but since I’m already posting…. the theater was crazy packed tonight, lots of shows looked to be all but sold out or sold out for everything from Black Panther to Red Sparrow, maybe spring break college crowd being back helped or something)

OK, well I heard from someone who heard from someone who heard from someone and they didn’t actually cancel the Fathom Events, they just accidentally entered a bunch of them into the system as reserved seating but the auditorium has no reserved seating so it was making it impossible to order tickets and variously giving out internal error, sold out, no showings scheduled, etc. and apparently it will be fixed soon and the ticketing will work again. So that is good.

Doesn’t help that their new app and online ticket system of the last couple years is horrendous and makes it barely even apparent they even show stuff like this.

There are so many poorly selling movies out this weekend they don’t even have space for a single showing or two this week?

alpinedownhiller
alpinedownhiller commented about AMC Rockaway 16 on Mar 16, 2018 at 2:52 am

Wonder what the heck is going on with this theater, now that they are finally getting into some of the better Fathom Events Classics for the year, all of a sudden it seems like none of the ticket links for this theater work for them. They either say sold out or when they don’t say sold out they give internal error. Is Rockaway once again pulling all of their Fathom Events Classics?

What the heck is up with this theater these days? Last year they ran them, and some pretty much sold out even the big #16 theater but then all of a sudden after not cancelling a couple that I’d imagine would be weaker sellers for that series they go and cancel two that would for sure have all but sold out and done way better than what they did end up using #16 for. That really made no sense.

I was glad to see them back here again for this year again even if the series had a bit of a weak start for titles this year, but now it seems just as they are gonna start to get into the more popular stuff they are pulling it again??

@HeisenDiaN – don’t forget though that Laser IMAX 3D still looks very bright AND (assuming the DCP is 4k) will still be in full 4k (or at least well upscaled 2k)

Dolby Projector is messed up here, not sure when it went bad, it was fine a number of weeks ago, but looked in and the screen looked weird, all radioactive and weird stripe on side of the screen. Apparently it’s been like this for a few days at least. Hopefully they fix it.

Yeah they ruined this theater. The new IMAX is a fake one and it’s supposedly a rather small one even for the fake ones. I never go here anymore.

I’m not sure why they would ever want to pull it from a theater. If anything, they’d be more wanting to pull the home video.
