I pass this place on HWY 18 everytime I visit friends in Big Bear. Yes, the old projection booth/snack bar building is now a real estate business.
Man, if I ever had the kind of money it would take to buy and revamp the place, I would do it in a heartbeat! Can you imagine watching a movie out under the stars up in the mountains of California? Sounds like heaven to me!
I remember going here as a kid! We saw Cinderella and had a popcorn fight with our friends in the next car. Too bad they didn’t repair the screen and re-open, would have been nice to have a drive-in closer to home than Rocky Point. I was born in Riverhead but moved to California in 1974, but spent all my summers back home, still remember the Flanders Drive-in though…sigh. Thinking about the drive-in brings up thoughts of The Big Duck, the Riverhead Raceway Indian, Wegert’s Grocery, and my grandparents place behind Long Island Kitchen’s. Good times.
Oh man, do I remember going here! It was the local “hot spot” for the kids when I was a teenager. I remember going here as a kid with my parents…it had a playground I think, though I may be confusing it with the drive-in in Azusa, CA, which wasn’t too terribly far from this one.
Sadly, either condos or townhomes sit on the drive-in’s site today.
Man, I can’t believe that Rocky Point Drive In is gone! Sad, really sad. I live in California but spent all my childhood summers on Long Island with family and Rocky Point was always one of our “must do’s” of the summer! Remember seeing Xanadu there…classic “bad” movie must see btw. We need to save our drive ins, they are a disappearing part of Americana.
